The Education Ministry told the Rajya Sabha that the number of Indian students studying abroad has increased by 52.2% in the last five years. Out of 8,92,989 Indian students studying abroad, the maximum number of students are in America (2,34,473 students). After this comes Canada, where there are 2,33,532 Indian students.

While 36,612 Indian students were studying in Britain in 2019, this number will increase to 1,36,921 in 2023. This is an increase of 273.9%. Let us know what is the reason behind this.

Why are Indians going to study in Britain?
There are two main reasons behind the increasing number of Indian students in Britain, firstly the top universities here and secondly the graduate route visa. The world’s top universities are present in Britain. According to the QS World University Rankings 2025, Imperial College London is the second best university in the world. After this, Oxford University is at third place and Cambridge University is at fifth place. Prestigious institutions like University College London are also included in the top-10 at number 9. Many universities of Britain are included in the top-50 institutions in the QS ranking, due to which students from all over the world want to come and study here.

However, not only universities, but graduate route visa has also played an important role in increasing the number of Indian students. The Graduate Route visa, introduced in July 2021, allows foreign students to stay in the UK for up to two years after completing an undergraduate or postgraduate degree. Students pursuing PhD are allowed to stay for three years. With this visa students can work, freelancing, pursue further study or apply for a ‘Skilled Worker’ visa if they find employment in the UK.

The graduate route visa has been particularly beneficial for Indian students. Of the total graduate route visas issued between 2021 and 2023, 42% went to Indian students. This visa not only gives the option to work in Britain, but also provides the facility to bring the family to Britain. Hence it is one of the most popular visas among Indian students.
