The number game has changed in Rajya Sabha, will the Modi government now play on the front foot?

New Delhi: There is good news for the BJP-led NDA. Now the figure of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has reached 115 in the upper house of Parliament i.e. Rajya Sabha. NDA’s seats in Rajya Sabha increased to 115. This has happened after the unopposed election of 11 new members. Out of these, 9 MPs are from BJP. Two are from its allies Janata Dal United and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction). The ruling coalition also has the support of 6 nominated members. Out of 12 vacant posts, Congress has won one seat from Telangana. Not only this, BJP alone has 96 members in Rajya Sabha, which makes it the largest party. After BJP’s lead in the upper house, the question is whether the party will now play on the front foot?

After Loksabha, now NDA is strong in Rajyasabha too

This question is because BJP did not get the success it expected in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The party had set a target of crossing 400 with the NDA alliance. However, the BJP-led NDA alliance stopped at 293 seats. BJP got stuck at 240 seats in this election. However, the alliance achieved the majority figure. In such a situation, the BJP leadership is now moving forward with alliance partners in the Lok Sabha. However, it has also had to back down in some recent decisions. These include the decision related to lateral recruitment. After coming to the front seat in the Rajya Sabha, it remains to be seen how BJP strengthens its position in the Lok Sabha.

MP News: George Kurien won the Rajya Sabha seat of MP without contesting the election, the seat was vacant due to Scindia’s resignation

Congress has 85 MPs and BJP has 96 MPs

However, the ruling NDA alliance now looks stronger in the Rajya Sabha. Still, the BJP-led alliance is still a little short of the majority figure of 119. Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy George Kurien is among those who won without contest this time. The ruling alliance also has the support of six nominated members and an independent member. With an additional seat from the Congress, the opposition’s tally in the Upper House has gone up to 85.
