There was a different era of Hindi films in the years 1970 and 80, where Amitabh created a stir by playing the role of an angry young man. Soon after the release of ‘Sholay’, maker Kamal Amrohi decided to make a period drama film of the same level. his/her dream project, which was to be the next ‘Mughal-e-Azam’, took seven years to make. It is said that the result was that the entire film industry drowned in debt.

The story of the only female Muslim ruler Razia Sultan

Kamal Amrohi’s film was the story of India’s only female Muslim ruler Razia Sultan, which was finally released in 1983. It was made with a reported budget of Rs 10 crore. It is said that this film proved to be more expensive than ‘Shaan’, the most expensive Indian film made at that time.

Urdu language used in films baffled everyone

This film had a big star cast of that time, in which apart from Hema Malini and Dharmendra, actors like Parveen Babi, Sohrab Modi and Ajit were also there. This film was one of the most awaited films of that era, but it flopped so badly. There was not just one but many reasons for this. It was told that the audience did not like the way the difficult Urdu language was included in the film. Some people also had problems with the length of the film.

People were shocked to see Dharmendra’s painted face

The film was also heavily criticized for the fact that Dharmendra had blackened his/her face to play the role of the slave warrior Yakut. All these things helped ‘Razia Sultan’ sink into the abyss. This film was able to earn only Rs 2 crore at the box office.

Viewers got irritated after seeing the closeness of Hema and Parveen Babi

The loneliness of ‘Razia Sultan’ was also shown in the film, in which along with her romance with Yakut, she was seen very close many times with her assistant Khakun i.e. Parveen Babi. The audience could not tolerate the closeness of both of them.

Family members started avoiding this film

Not only this, to show the relationship between the two women, Kamal Amrohi had also included a romantic song between the two characters. A lot of negativity spread regarding these things and the audience from the family category started avoiding watching this film. Along with this, many clerics also objected to the filming of a Muslim woman in this manner.

Salaries of many crew members were also withheld

‘Razia Sultan’ was more than a film. This was a project that took several years to make and cost 60% more than ‘Sholay’. Hundreds of technicians and thousands of people worked as extras in this film. Amrohi had taken several loans from within the industry and had also withheld the salaries of several crew members to make the film. he/she had promised them that they would pay them after release. At the same time, when the film suffered a huge loss of 80%, the returns became zero. As a result, many businessmen in Bollywood faced losses. Amrohi paid most of the crew members from his/her own pocket. Distributors and exhibitors suffered huge losses. According to IMDb, it has been said that this was the period when almost the entire Hindi film industry was in debt for some time.

‘Razia Sultan’ became her last film

However, after some time Bollywood took control, but it is said that Kamal Amrohi did not take control again. he/she started a film named ‘Majnoon’ with Rajesh Khanna but due to financial loss due to ‘Razia’ that film got shelved. After this he/she started writing a script on the Mughal ruler Bahadur Shah Zafar, which he/she named ‘Aakhri Mughal’. However, he/she was never able to complete it. That film ended after her death in 1993 and ‘Razia Sultan’ became her last film.
