In August 2024, Hasina left the post after 15 years of suppression, including torture, extraordinary murders, and disappearance. Protests led by students described by many people as the monsoon revolution finally forced them into exile in India. Hasina’s Awami League party government, which was in the office through continuous inappropriate elections, tried to reduce protests with excessive force, causing over 800 deaths.

Vandalism came when Hasina was going to address her supporters online. There is a growing demand in India to bring Hasina back. But to evaluate risks before extradition, under international standards, the Government of India will require.

The interim government headed by Nobel Peace Prize Award winner Muhammad Yunus has adopted reforms to repair institutions including justice system. It is also taking steps towards violation of rights and accountability for corruption, and has conducted a reliable election.

Nevertheless, the Yumns administration has rapidly pressure on restless citizens of families of political groups, students, or families of the families who harm during the monsoon revolution. While it is facing a campaign of misinformation about alleged abuses against religious and ethnic minorities, it has yet to successfully assure minority groups, especially Hindus, who are afraid of attacks. The army is obstructing access to previous illegal custody sites and destroying evidence, apparently to protect its image.

The Yunus government should propose a consensus proposal in the upcoming United Nations Human Rights Council session in March to request technical assistance, further investigation, and request for monitoring and reporting by United Nations -backed human rights experts. The resolution should also accept the atrocities of previous administration and recognize the steps of positive human rights taken by the interim government.

Bangladeshi, eager to see justice, should support a United Nations -backed mechanism that can help secure a democratic future rather than a cycle of violence and revenge.
