The minority group says that violence against minorities in Bangladesh continues


Bangladesh’s largest minority group Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council on Wednesday claimed that violence against religious and ethnic minorities as well as indigenous people continues to stop.

The group issued a press release before UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres visit Bangladesh, stating that in the first two months of January and February this year, there were 92 incidents of targets of minorities and indigenous people in the first two months of January and February.

The minority group reported that out of 92 violent incidents, 11 murders, three rapes, 25 attacks on temples, one incident of religious insults, 6 attacks on indigenous people, 38 attacks, barbarism, and looting of homes and businesses, two dismissal from jobs and 6 other attacks.

It is worth noting that in five months from August 4 to December 31 last year, there were 2,184 attacks targeting minorities.

A delegation of the Unity Council visited the cruel murder of the Gold Trader Dilip Das in the recent night of 9 March in Naihat Bazar, Ashulia, Sadar, Dhaka.

The press release also mentions that the leaders expressed condolences to the murder, the wife and family of Dilip Das, and demanded that the killers be arrested quickly, brought for justice, and exempted punishment.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) informed the Rajya Sabha that a total of 2,601 Bangladeshi citizens have been arrested along the Indo-Bengladesh border while trying to enter Indian territory in the last 13 months.

The Union Minister of State (MOS) shared this information in a written reply to the house, stating that these 2,601 Bangladeshis were arrested between January 1, 2024 and 31 January 2025.

According to data shared by MOS, 176 Bangladeshi intruders were continued in January 2025, as the Border Security Force (BSF), was stable in its mission to curb the Indo-Bangladesh border as well as illegal activities.

Reversing the last 12 months of 2024, the data shows the apprehension of 253 Bangladeshis in December, followed by 310 in November, 331 in October, 300 in September, 214 in August, 214 in August, 267 in July, and 247 Bangladesh in June indicate illegal crossings from Bangladesh.
