The ‘illusion’ of American degree, even after studies, there are jobs, then why are Indian students going to study?

Indian students in America: Studying in America is very popular among Indians. Even though the fees of American universities are very high and due to not getting good jobs, Indian students are also returning back. But even after this, American degrees are considered very attractive among Indian students. Experts say that there does not seem to be much improvement in it even in the next year i.e. 2025. America’s shaky economic situation is going to have an impact on jobs.
However, despite all this, Study Abroad Consultant says that Indian students want to study in America, the main reason for which is America’s policies. Due to the policies here, one gets good returns on investment in pursuing graduation degree. Additionally, students get scholarships in American universities. America has emerged as a better option amid political tension and strict immigration rules being implemented in other countries like Canada, Australia and Europe.

Chances of getting a job are decreasing due to increasing fees.

Studying in America is very expensive. A graduate degree can cost $30,000 to $80,000 annually. Speaking to the Economics Times, Adarsh Khandelwal, co-founder of study abroad company Collegify, said that in 2022, 65-70% of the students studying in America had got jobs. This figure will come down to 60% in 2023. It is expected to further reduce to 55% in 2024. Let us know why America is popular for studies.

Why do students want to study in America?

After the return of Donald Trump, changes in visa rules and changes in jobs available after studies are being expected. However, Adarsh Khandelwal does not believe so. Most study abroad consultants also feel that Trump’s return will not have much impact on Indian students going to America. “The situation may remain the same due to strict visa policies, limited OPT extensions and slow economic recovery,” Khandelwal said.

America is the first choice for post-graduation among Indian students. Especially in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) fields. Explaining the importance of OPT visa, Adarsh Khandelwal said, it allows students of STEM fields to work for three years after studies. he/she said, “Students studying from American universities mostly work in emerging fields like AI, healthcare and fintech, where the starting annual salary is more than 90 thousand dollars.”

More than 70% of Indian students are choosing technology based courses like AI, Data Science and Information Systems. In 2023, 1,08,438 Indian students took admission in Computer Science alone. Business and management courses are also popular, which provide good career options in fields like fintech and consulting. Now three-year Indian graduation courses (non-engineering) are also being recognized in many American universities. For these reasons, Indians are going to US despite limited job opportunities.
