The greatest master of stumping, made a record 36 years ago which even Dhoni and Pant could not break, has been the chief selector

New Delhi. We all have seen one or two stumpings in a cricket match. This is a common thing for any match. But have you seen a match in which a wicketkeeper has finished half the innings of the opposing team with stumpings? This feat was achieved by a wicketkeeper from no other country, but from India. The year was 1988. Vivian Richards’ West Indies team was on a tour of India and was leading 1-0 after 3 matches. The fourth and last test match of the series was played in Chennai, which is considered memorable for many reasons. One of these reasons was Kiran More’s record-breaking stumping.

In the Chennai Test match played between 11th and 15th January, India batted first and scored 382 runs. Kapil Dev scored the highest 109 runs for Team India playing under the captaincy of Ravi Shastri. In reply to India’s 382 runs, West Indies’ first innings was limited to 184 runs. After this, India declared its second innings at 217 runs for 7 wickets. In this way, West Indies got a target of 416 runs. The West Indies team, which was considered very strong in those days, surrendered badly in the second innings and was all out after scoring just 160 runs.

More’s special record in Hirwani’s debut match
This India-West Indies Test is most remembered as the debut match of Narendra Hirwani. Leg spinner Hirwani took 8 wickets in both the innings of this match, i.e. a total of 18 wickets and was selected as the Player of the Match. Due to this historic performance of Hirwani, the achievement of Kiran More was overshadowed.

Very few people know that Kiran More stumped out five batsmen in the second innings of West Indies. he/she did four stumpings on Hirwani’s ball and one on WV Raman’s ball. This was the first time in cricket history when 5 batsmen of a team were stumped out. It is said that neither the past nor the future. Now we don’t know about the future but it is true that till date no wicketkeeper has been able to match Kiran More’s achievement, let alone surpass it.

Dhoni and Pant were able to make only 2 stumpings in an innings
India got many great wicketkeepers after Kiran More. These include legends from captain MS Dhoni to Rishabh Pant and Nayan Mongia to Saba Karim. But Kiran More’s record of 5 stumpings in an innings and 6 stumpings in a match still stands tall. MS Dhoni and Rishabh Pant have not been able to make more than 2 stumpings in an innings. PK Sen is second after Kiran More, who made 4 stumpings in an innings in 1952.

220 victims in 143 matches
Kiran More played 49 Tests and 94 ODIs for India. he/she scored 1285 runs in 64 Test innings and 563 runs in 65 ODI innings. he/she has 110 catches and 20 stumpings to his/her name in Test matches. he/she took 63 catches and made 27 stumpings in ODIs. Kiran More also became the chief selector of the Indian team a few years after retirement. In 2007, he/she joined the rebel league ICL. But soon he/she left ICL and returned to BCCI.
