Photo: File Petrol PumpOpening a Petrol Pump: In a major step towards strengthening cooperatives in the country, the government on Wednesday said Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) will be given an option to convert their wholesale consumer petrol pumps into retail outlets. The government said that PACS having wholesale petrol and diesel dealership license will be given this option only once. The government further said that PACS will be given priority in allotment of new petrol/diesel dealerships to strengthen the cooperative movement in the country. These societies will also be able to get LPG dealership. The decision was taken in a meeting with Cooperation Minister Amit Shah and Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, according to an official statement. Besides, it was decided in the meeting that sugar cooperative mills would be given priority to sell ethanol under the ethanol blending programme.

The petroleum ministry will also change the rules to make PACS eligible for LPG distribution, the statement said. PACS will be placed under Combined Category 2 (CC2) along with Freedom Fighters and Sports Quota for allotment of new Petrol/Diesel dealerships. Central excise duty is 20% of the price of petrol and 17.6% of the price of diesel. Diesel rate also changed
Similarly, diesel prices have increased across the country. Diesel has become costlier by 48 paise in Gurgaon and Patna to Rs 90.24 per liter and Rs 94.51 per liter respectively. It has become costlier by 5 paise to Rs 87.94 per liter in Bengaluru, an increase of Rs 0.06 to Rs 92.43 per liter in Pune. Petrol and diesel prices vary by state depending on various parameters like Value Added Tax (VAT), freight charges, local taxes etc. The last nationwide change in fuel rates took place on May 21 last year, when Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman cut excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 per liter and on diesel by Rs 6 per litre.
