The dragon will rage again! Amidst the dispute on LAC, India will deploy enemy’s ‘Kal’ on the border

Rajat Pandit, New Delhi: Following the advance deployment of howitzers, missiles, rocket systems and loitering ammunition along the Chinese border, India is now moving towards inducting long-range, high-volume precision strike capabilities. In such a situation, long range weapons will become the enemy’s enemy. This could prove decisive in the event of a war with China. It can also expand its indigenous ammunition vendor base to counter global supply chain disruptions.

Lessons from the Russia-Ukraine war

Taking lessons from the Russia-Ukraine war, in which 80% of casualties have been caused by artillery fire, Director General of Army Artillery Lieutenant General Adosh Kumar said the Force will be equipped with 100 and K-9 Vajra self-propelled tracked gun systems, as well as additional It will include Dhanush howitzer, Sharang gun and Pinaka multi-launch rocket system. Some of the 100 such guns, first inducted at a cost of Rs 4,366 crore, are already deployed in eastern Ladakh by the ‘winterized’ K-9 Vajra regiment amid the ongoing military standoff with China.

How is the strength of the army increasing?

For example, long-range vectoring in the form of the indigenous Pinaka rocket system has added more firepower to the arsenal. The Army will add six more Pinaka regiments to the existing four. At the same time, the strike range of the rocket is now being increased from the original 38 kilometers to 75 kilometers, and high altitude tests have already been completed.

Apart from this, a contract worth about Rs 8,500 crore for 307 new indigenous Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), which has a strike range of up to 48 km, is also going to be signed soon. Additionally, testing will begin next year for a planned induction of 300 ‘shoot-and-scoot’ mounted gun systems and 400 ‘versatile’ towed artillery gun systems.

Work on increasing the range of missiles

DRDO is also working to increase the range, accuracy and lethality of conventional Pralay ballistic missiles (range of 400 km) and Nirbhay cruise missiles (1,000 km). Also, DRDO is developing hypersonic missiles, which will be different from the 450 km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles already inducted.

Lieutenant General Kumar said that with its accurate and devastating firepower, artillery today represents the true essence of military power in dominating the battlefield. We are modernizing at a greater pace than ever before. Our mantra is ‘Modernization through Indigenization’.

Pinaka will hit up to 300 kilometers!

he/she said Pinaka is one of the best rocket systems in the world. It is being used on a large scale. Our goal is to first double the range and then quadruple it. We are looking at 120 km, 300 km range. In the field of loiter ammunition, the ‘Make-II’ category project (industry funded prototype development) has received “very good response” from private companies and start-ups.

Ammunition with range of 40-100 km

he/she said that our aim is to develop loiter ammunition with a range of 40-100 km, so that targets can be hit in the operational depth of the enemy. Along with diversification of vendor base, ‘great emphasis’ is also being laid on indigenous production of various types of ammunition. Lieutenant General Kumar said that earlier we were dependent on only one production agency for 155 mm artillery ammunition. Now, production of all types of 155 mm ammunition has been opened to public and private sector.
