When does a dog bite become dangerous?

Dog bite causes rabies, which is colloquially known as alark or jalakanta. This is a disease caused by a virus, due to which the brain becomes rapidly swollen (encephalitis). Rabies disease is caused by Lyssa Virus of Rabidoviridae family. It is a neurotropic virus that affects the central nervous system. It is also called hydrophobia or water thorn, because in this the patient is afraid of water. Initial symptoms include high fever and tingling. If the patient becomes violent and becomes confused and loses consciousness, death is almost certain.

Can rabies be fatal even 20 years after a dog bite?

Ravikant Chaturvedi, a doctor of internal medicine in Ranchi, says that dogs usually bite humans in two situations. First, when a person teases a dog and the dog bites, it does not usually cause rabies. At the same time, in the second situation, when the dog bites without any reason (when the person does not tease, scare or hit the dog), then the risk of rabies can increase significantly.
Actually, due to rabies the dog becomes disoriented and hence keeps wandering here and there and bites the people it comes in front of. That’s why people need to take a lot of precautions after a dog bite. If a person gets rabies after being bitten by a dog, he/she can die. Sometimes the effects of rabies can be seen even after 20 years and at that time a person can die.

The effects of dog bites last for years. It may not be affected in the initial days or years due to the immunity of the person, but whenever the person becomes weak, these viruses become active again. In such a situation, whenever a dog bites, one must get rabies vaccine immediately. Using any exorcism or remedy can lead to death of a dog bite victim. In such a situation, do not delay or be careless at all. Get the patient vaccinated for rabies immediately.

Dr. Ravikant Chaturvedi, Internal Medicine

Death will not be averted by rubbing salt, turmeric or red chilli.

According to the National Rabies Control Program guidelines, dog bites are 100 percent fatal. If the victim does not get timely treatment then his/her death is certain. Never be careless like this. When a dog bites, the blood gets infected and the blood starts becoming poisonous. Many people start applying salt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, lemon, chalk or clay on the wound to reduce this poison. Some people also apply peepal leaves on the wound. But, no such thing can save the life of the patient. Also exorcism does not help. Do not follow any such advice at all and always get the rabies vaccination done on time.
