What is the collegium system?

The current collegium system, formed in 1993, includes a group of senior judges, including the Chief Justice of India, who decides on the appointment and transfer of judges in the higher judiciary. In an attempt to remove these concerns, the government proposed the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC), which was aimed at converting the collegium system from a non-judicial body, but eventually the Supreme Court rejected it in 2014.
