In international cricket, many batsmen have scored centuries in their debut Test, while some batsmen have made this occasion memorable for themselves by scoring a century in the 100th Test of their career. So far, only two batsmen in Test cricket – Pakistan’s Javed Miandad and West Indies’ Gordon Greenidge – have achieved the feat of scoring a century in their debut and 100th Test. Apart from this, England’s Joe Root has a record in his/her name which no one else has been able to achieve till now. Root is the only batsman to score a century in the 98th, 99th and 100th Tests of his/her career.

Root, who made his/her Test debut against India in December 2012, played his/her 100th Test against the same team in February 2021. In his/her first Test, he/she could not score a century (73 in the first innings and 20* in the second innings) but made his/her 100th Test match special by scoring a double century. Apart from Root, only David Warner has scored a double century in the 100th Test so far.

Currently going through the golden phase of his/her career Joe Root Root has scored 12,402 runs (data till 12 September) in 146 Tests at an average of 50.62, which includes 34 centuries. Root, who has captained England in 64 Tests, played his/her 98th and 99th Tests against Sri Lanka in Galle. In the first innings of his/her 98th Test, which started on 14 January 2021 during the Covid pandemic, he/she contributed 228 runs (321 balls, 18 fours and a six) and 1 run in the second innings. In his/her 99th Test (22-26 January 2021) on the same ground, he/she missed a double century by just 14 runs. In the first innings of the Test, he/she scored 186 runs (309 balls, 18 fours) and 11 runs in the second innings. In his/her 100th Test against India in Chennai, he/she scored 218 runs (377 balls, 19 fours and two sixes) in the first innings and 40 runs in the second innings. As a captain in this Test, he/she was successful in leading the team to victory and was awarded the Player of the Match for his/her excellent performance.

Root enjoys batting against Team India. In 30 Tests against India so far, he/she has scored 2846 runs at an average of 58.08, which includes 10 centuries and 11 half-centuries. Against Team India, he/she has scored 1574 runs at an average of 74.95 in 15 Tests on England grounds and 1272 runs at an average of 45.42 in 15 Tests on Indian grounds. Not only this, Root, who has taken 69 wickets in Tests as a spinner, has been successful in dismissing 19 batsmen against India.

Ponting scored a century in his/her 99th and 100th Test
If Root made his/her 100th Test memorable by scoring a double century, Australia’s Ricky Ponting did the same by scoring centuries in both innings. Ponting holds the record of scoring centuries in his/her 99th and 100th Tests. he/she scored centuries in three of the four innings of these two Tests. In the 99th Test of his/her career, he/she scored 117 and 11 runs against South Africa in Melbourne (December 2005), while in his/her 100th Test (January 2006), he/she scored 120 in the first innings and an unbeaten 143 in the second against the same team. Like Root, Ponting was also the captain of the Australian team in his/her 100th Test and was named Player of the Match in the team’s 8-wicket victory.

West Indies’ Brian Lara, India’s Sourav Ganguly and Australia’s Michael Clarke scored centuries in the 98th and 99th Tests of their careers but missed out on doing so in their 100th Test. Ganguly played his/her 100th Test against Australia in Melbourne in December 2007 and scored 43 runs in the first innings and 40 in the second innings. Earlier, in the 98th Test of his/her career, he/she scored 102 and 46 against Pakistan in Kolkata and 239 and 91 in his/her 99th Test in Bengaluru.

Lara played his/her 100th Test against South Africa in Durban in December 2003 (Boxing Day Test) in which he/she was dismissed after scoring 72 runs in the first innings and 11 runs in the second innings. Earlier, in the 98th Test of his/her career, Lara scored 191 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo and 202 runs against South Africa in Johannesburg in his/her 99th Test. Australia’s Michael Clarke played his/her 100th Test against England in Perth in December 2013 and scored 24 runs in the first innings and 23 runs in the second innings. In the 98th Test of his/her career, he/she scored 113 against England in Brisbane and 148 runs in the first innings against the same team in the 99th Test in Adelaide.
