The river originates from the hills of Gavilgarh
The Tapi River originates from the Gavilgarh Hills in south central Madhya Pradesh. This place is called Multai, which is in Betul. It flows westward between the Satpura Range and Jalgaon region in Maharashtra and then goes towards the Surat Plains in Gujarat. Finally it falls into the Gulf of Khambhat. The Tapi River has three more tributaries, which are known as Girna, Panzara and Purna.
This is how the river got its name
The Tapi River is 724 km long and drains an area of 30,000 sq. km. According to Hindu mythology, the name of this river is derived from the word Tapi, the daughter of Lord Surya and Goddess Chhaya. This river of western India starts flowing from Betul and then flows through the plains of Surat and finally merges into the Arabian Sea.

Tapti River has been given great importance in Hinduism since ancient times. Compared to other rivers, this river has high quality fertile soil, which is very beneficial for the farmers. This soil has also been used for irrigation purposes.

There is a religious belief that the Tapti river is the only river that dissolves bones. People also perform Pinddaan, Tarpan and Deepdaan in the stream of this river. There is also a legend that Narad Muni took the help of Tapti river to cure his/her leprosy. Here he/she repented for his/her mistake, after which he/she got rid of leprosy. It is said that if the bones of a person who died an untimely death are immersed in the Tapti river, then his/her dead soul gets peace.
