Thank you Gabbar: ‘You took my place in Mohali, I did not get what I deserved’


New Delhi. Indian cricket team’s experienced opener Shikhar Dhawan announced his/her retirement from cricket on Saturday (24 August). Dhawan said that now the time has come to say goodbye to international and domestic cricket. After Shikhar, famous as ‘Gabbar’ among his/her friends, announced his/her retirement from all formats of the game, the cricket world remembered his/her brilliance in different ways. Some said that Dhawan will be missed on the cricket field, while some said that Gabbar did not get what he/she deserved. Some remembered his/her unique celebration. Dhawan, who made a great contribution to the top order team after the era of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly, played his/her last ODI two years ago.

Dhawan Shikhar had replaced Sehwag in the team as an opening batsman. The Nawab of Najafgarh was among the first to congratulate him/her on ‘X’. Sehwag wrote, ‘Congratulations Shikhar. Ever since you replaced me in Mohali, you have not looked back. And have given some great performances in the last few years. Keep having fun. And live life to the fullest. Best wishes to you forever.’ his/her former Indian teammate and current head coach Gautam Gambhir also congratulated him/her on his/her retirement.

Gambhir wrote, ‘Congratulations Shikhar for a wonderful career. I know you will spread the same happiness through whatever you do in the future.’ Indian cricketers Hardik Pandya and Shreyas Iyer also wished him/her. Hardik Pandya wrote in his/her Instagram story, ‘Only the best wishes for you Shikhar Pa. Congratulations on a wonderful career.’ Shreyas tagged Dhawan and wrote, ‘Congratulations Shikhar Pa. Best wishes for whatever happens to you in the future.’

Former Test opener Wasim Jaffer congratulated Dhawan on his/her wonderful career and recalled his/her team spirit and impressive performance in big tournaments. he/she wrote, ‘he/she has been a player of big tournaments. he/she never got the praise he/she deserved, but as long as the team was winning, he/she never cared who got the praise. Dhawan was the Player of the Tournament in India’s ICC Under-19 World Cup win in 2004. he/she steadily progressed in his/her game and made his/her ODI debut in 2010. he/she was the Player of the Tournament in India’s Champions Trophy win in the 2013 season, scoring the most runs (363). he/she has scored 10867 runs in international cricket across all formats. he/she is 12th in the list of highest run-scorers in international cricket for India. he/she has scored 24 centuries and 79 half-centuries in his/her international career.
