Test in which 8 centuries were scored in two innings, one score of 300+, all the players of one team bowled.

New Delhi. What is the maximum number of centuries scored in a single cricket test? Most of the cricket experts’ estimate regarding this would be five or maximum six centuries but the correct answer is 8 centuries. So far, there have been two Tests in Test cricket in which the batsmen of both the teams have scored a total of eight centuries. There is such a test in which the batsmen scored 8 centuries in the first two innings, which also included a triple century.

In the first two innings of the fourth Test of the series between West Indies and South Africa held at St. John’s in 2005, four batsmen each from both the teams had scored centuries. Chris Gayle played an inning of 317 runs in this match for the host Indies team.

South Africa’s Smith, AB, Kallis and Prince had scored centuries.
In this Test played from 29 April to 3 May 2007, there were a lot of runs and the bowlers were seen struggling. In the match, the South African team captained by Graeme Smith won the toss and decided to bat first. For South Africa, AB de Villiers and Graeme Smith had already proved the wicket to be a ‘batting paradise’ by making a partnership of 245 runs for the first wicket. De Villiers scored 114 and Smith scored 126 runs. After the dismissal of these two, the next two wickets in the form of Boeta Dipenaar and Herschelle Gibbs fell quickly but after this Jacques Kallis (147) and Ashwell Prince (131) scored centuries and took the team beyond 500 runs. After the dismissal of both these batsmen, South Africa declared its innings after scoring 588 runs (163 overs) for 6 wickets. Mark Boucher (11) and Shaun Pollock (13) were unbeaten. Out of 11 players of the Indies team, 8 bowled.

After Sarwan was out on a personal score of 127, Brian Lara (4) was out early but Gayle made a partnership of 149 runs for the fourth wicket with Shivnarine Chanderpaul (127). On the fourth day of the match, Chris Gayle completed his triple century in 462 balls with the help of 34 fours and three sixes. He became the victim of fast bowler Monde Jondeki as the fifth wicket. Another century for the host team came from the bat of Dwayne Bravo (107). West Indies’ first innings finally ended at 747 runs after 235.2 overs.

Wicketkeeper Boucher also bowled and took one wicket.
All 11 players including wicketkeeper Mark Boucher bowled for South Africa in this match. Boucher bowled only in this match in his entire international career. The interesting thing was that he was successful in taking the wicket of ‘Shatakveer’ Dwayne Bravo in just 1.2 overs of bowling. For South Africa, Jondeki took maximum three wickets while non-regular bowler Smith and De Villiers took two wickets each. On the last day of the match, South Africa had scored 127 runs losing one wicket in the second innings and the match was a dull draw.

These centuries included a double century while another batsman had missed the double century. In this Test held from 8 to 12 March, host Sri Lanka, while batting, declared the first innings at 570 runs for 4 wickets with the help of centuries from Kumar Sangakkara (142), Lahiru Thirimane (155) and Dinesh Chandimal (116*). Bangladesh gave a befitting reply and made a big score of 638 runs in the first innings, which included centuries from Mohammad Ashraful (190), captain Mushfiqur Rahim (200) and Nasir Hussain (100). Rahim became the first batsman for Bangladesh to score a double century in Test cricket, while before him Ashraful missed this opportunity by getting out on the score of 190.
