Test in which 5 batsmen of a team got out on 0, the same team won by the difference of innings

New Delhi. It is difficult to imagine that in a Test match, 5 batsmen of a team get out at 0 and they win the match by an innings margin but this has happened in the 147-year history of Test cricket. In November 2008, 5 batsmen of South Africa (South Africa Vs Bangladesh) failed to open their account in the first innings of the Centurion Test against Bangladesh. Despite this, the host team not only managed to reach a score of 429 runs but also won the match by an innings and 48 runs.

Two players of the Bangladesh cricket team, which is touring India for a two-Test series – Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim – were part of this ‘special’ Test and performed brilliantly. Team India’s current bowling coach Morne Morkel was also included in the South African team for this Test. This last match of the two-Test series between South Africa and Bangladesh was played in Centurion from December 26 and the host team won in just three days.

Sehwag-Gilchrist and Travis Head, famous for their stormy batting, all three have a special record of getting out on 0

Despite Shakib Al Hasan’s 6 wickets, Bangladesh suffered an innings defeat in the Test. Shakib Al Hasan/Insta

Bangladesh team had scored 250 runs in the first innings
In the match, Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful won the toss and decided to bat first. In the first innings, Bangladesh team was out on the first day itself after scoring 250 runs in 76.2 overs, which included half centuries from Mushfiqur Rahim (65 runs, 9 fours and two sixes) and Junaid Siddiqui (67 runs, 11 fours). Opener Tamim Iqbal also contributed 31 runs. Bangladesh’s Makhaya Ntini and Morne Morkel took 4-4 wickets each.

5 South African batsmen including de Villiers were out on 0
In reply, 5 South African batsmen – Neil McKenzie, AB de Villiers, Morne Morkel, Monde Zondeki and Makhaya Ntini were out without scoring any runs. Despite this, if the host team reached 429 runs, then the credit goes to the centuries of Ashwell Prince and wicketkeeper Mark Boucher and Hashim Amla’s half-century of 71 runs. While Prince remained unbeaten by scoring 162 runs with the help of 23 fours and two sixes, Boucher scored 117 runs with the help of 16 fours. Spinner Shakib Al Hasan, who scored 30 runs in Bangladesh’s first innings, took 6 wickets for 99 runs while Shahadat Hussain took 2 wickets.

The only batsman who scored centuries in the 98th, 99th and 100th Tests, scored 180+ all three times, was also the captain

Bangladesh team was all out at 131 in the second innings
The condition of Bangladesh’s second innings was even worse after being burdened with a huge lead of 179 runs. The entire team was out after scoring 131 runs in 36.4 overs and lost the match by an innings and 48 runs. Rakibul Hasan became the top scorer by scoring 28 runs. For South Africa, Ntini, Markel and Zondeki took two wickets each. South Africa won the series 2-0 and Ashwell Prince was the Player of the Match and the Series.

When 4 batsmen made ‘duck’ in the test match but Indian team still won by an innings
Apart from this Centurion Test, there are four such Tests in which the team whose 4 batsmen got out on 0, managed to win by an innings margin. The Indian team has been a part of one of these Tests. In the India-England Test in March 2021, Team India won by an innings and 25 runs. Like the Centurion Test, the Ahmedabad Test was also decided in 3 days. In the match, the England team was all out for 205 runs in the first innings. Axar Patel took 4 and R Ashwin took 3 wickets. In response, 4 batsmen in Team India’s innings – Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Siraj could not open the account.

3 cricketers with the same surname, all three fast bowlers, could play only 1 Test for India despite a brilliant debut

Despite this, with the help of Rishabh Pant’s century (101 runs), Washington Sundar’s unbeaten 96 and Akshar Patel’s 43 runs, Team India was able to reach 365 runs. In the second innings, the England team surrendered to R. Ashwin and Akshar Patel (5-5 wickets). Dan Lawrence played the highest innings of 50 runs for England but the entire team was out for 135 runs and lost the Test by an innings margin. Team India won the four-Test series 3-1. Pant was the Player of the Match.

Apart from this, in the Perth Test between Australia and Pakistan in November 1999, despite 4 batsmen getting out at 0, the Australian team won the match by an innings margin and in the Lord’s Test between England and Pakistan in August 2010, despite 4 batsmen getting out at 0, the England team won the match by an innings margin.
