New Delhi: The CBI has registered a new case of corruption against Congress MP Karti Chidambaram, son of former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram. he/she is accused of allegedly giving alcoholic beverages company Diageo Scotland relief from a ban on the duty-free sale of its whiskey. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) FIR said the case pertains to alleged suspicious payments made by Diageo Scotland and Sequoia Capitals to Advantage Strategic Consulting Pvt Ltd, which is owned by Karti P Chidambaram and his/her close associate S. It is an entity controlled by Bhaskara Raman. It said, ‘The investigation revealed that various FIPB resolutions were examined, which found that Diageo Scotland and Sequoia Capitals had suspiciously transferred funds to Advantage Strategic Consulting Pvt Ltd, Which Karti P Chidambaram and his/her close associate S. There is an entity controlled by Bhaskara Raman. The agency alleged that its investigation found that Diageo was importing Johnnie Walker whiskey to Scotland, UK duty-free. No immediate reaction was available from the suspects named in the FIR.

What is the allegation?

The agency alleged that in April 2005 the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), which had a monopoly on the sale of imported duty-free liquor in India, banned the sale of Diageo Group’s duty-free products in India, resulting in Diageo Scotland. suffered huge losses, as 70 percent of its business in India was related to the sale of Johnnie Walker whiskey. The CBI FIR alleges that Diageo Scotland approached Karti Chidambaram for help in getting the ban lifted and paid US$15,000 to Advantage Strategic Consulting, which took it in the name of ‘consultancy fees’.
