Tension between India and Canada due to Justice Trudeau, what will be New Delhi’s strategy next?

New Delhi: After the recent developments between Canada and India, the diplomatic tension between the two countries does not seem to be ending soon. The Indian Foreign Ministry has made it clear in its statement that it is free to take further steps on this issue, while on the other hand, similar indications have been received from Canada that at present the relations can move forward in any direction. Let us try to know what possibilities both the countries have within the scope of diplomatic relations. The way Trudeau has been accusing the Indian government for the last one year, the possibility cannot be ruled out that Canada will not take this matter further.

Question of economic sanctions?

Canadian Foreign Minister Milonie Jolie said regarding economic sanctions against India that everything is on the table…that is, Canada has kept its options open. Foreign affairs expert Rajeev Dogra says that our trade relations with Canada are not on a very large landscape and even if Canada imposes economic sanctions, it will harm Canadian exporters more than India. Whereas foreign affairs expert Professor Swaran Singh says that if the Trudeau government tries to impose any kind of economic sanctions against India, then its scope will reach up to G7, it does not seem possible because of the way PM Modi is included in this group. Being invited along with the summits, it does not seem that Canada has the support of any partner country, it is clear from this that if sanctions are imposed then it will be limited only to Canada-India trade relations. Experts say that in the next strategy, Canada can reduce the number of students studying there, but they have already reduced to half and now they are moving towards other destinations. Especially as the number of diplomatic officers has been reduced, there is a fear that a limited number of visas may be issued for Canada. This may cause loss to India in terms of students going to study in Canada.

Why mention the Vienna Convention?

Canada mentioned the Vienna Convention on Tuesday, so the question is whether in such a situation it can try to raise the issue at the international level? Regarding this, Rajeev Dogra says that Canada itself has put aside all the rules of the Vienna Convention. Because according to the convention, diplomats have immunity and they cannot be dragged into the legal process. In such a situation, on what basis can this matter be raised? At the same time, Professor Swaran Singh says that the kind of irresponsible approach Canada has shown so far, it does not seem that Canada itself would think of raising such matters at that level.

Complaint with G-7 and File Eyes?

The Canadian government has said that it will take this matter to Five Eyes and G-7. In this direction, PM Trudeau also discussed with the British PM on Monday. Although experts believe that last year also Trudeau had worked on the same strategy but it was of no use. Swaran Singh says that the G-Seven Summit is to be held in Canada next year and if India decides to go there as a special invitee, will it be good for Canada’s image? Experts believe that the prestige of BRICS as a group is continuously increasing and in such a situation, the G-7 surrounded by challenges would not want to displease an economic power like India.

India will wait and watch and respond accordingly

Experts say that till now there have been absurd statements from Canada, especially from the Prime Minister himself and allegations without logic. But in India, work has been done silently at the top level of the government with an action-oriented approach. India last year asked 41 Canadian diplomats to leave the country and has now expelled 6. In such a situation, India’s approach has been action oriented. India has responded politely and strongly to Canada’s aggressive language. In such a situation, it does not seem that the international community will come out in support of Canada. Last time also, America had engaged with Canada in this matter to some extent, other countries had thus distanced themselves from saying anything on vote bank politics.
