In the context of football, he/she described the great Diego Maradona as the real hero of his/her era but also said that the current generation favorite player is Leonal Messi.

The PM said, ‘I think there is the strength to make the whole world energetic in sports. The spirit of the game combines people from different countries together. So I would never want sports to be credited. I really believe that sports play a major role in human development, they are not just sports. They connect people at a deep level. In the context of the popularity of football in India, he/she recalled his/her journey to Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh, where he/she saw a deep love for the game among the residents who called their region ‘Mini Brazil’. The Prime Minister said this in the context of Bicharpur.

PM Modi said, ‘There is a district named Shahdol, which is a completely tribal area. Where people of tribal community live. When I visited there, I saw about 80 to 100 young boys and even older people, who were all wearing sports jersey. I asked him/her where all of you are from, then he/she replied that we are from Mini Brazil. he/she told that football is being played in his/her village for four generations. About 80 national level football players have come out from here and their entire village is dedicated to football. he/she told me that during his/her annual football match, about 20,000 to 25,000 spectators from nearby villages come to see.

When PM Modi was asked about his/her favorite football player, he/she said, ‘If we talk about the past, then a name that always came out in the 1980s was from Maradona. For that generation, he/she was seen as a real hero. If you ask today’s generation, they will say with Tapak (Leonal) Messi.
