Talking to Russian President after Ukraine visit… Is PM Modi on a mission to stop the war?

New Delhi: The war between Russia and Ukraine, which started 29 months ago, i.e. about two and a half years ago, is still not completely over. The situation is such that during the war, not even a single meeting has taken place between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. A round of talks started once or twice from both sides (at the ministerial level), but it was insufficient. Both Ukraine and Russia have had to pay the price of this war. Now the rest of the world also wants that it should end. India also wants the same. For this, Prime Minister Modi himself has now taken the charge. First meeting President Zelensky in Ukraine and now talking to President Putin on the phone today, it is enough to tell that the PM has started a campaign to stop the war. With his/her efforts, the possibility of bringing the two warring leaders Zelensky and Putin to a table for face-to-face talks is very high.Talking to Putin on the phone
PM Modi spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone today i.e. on 27 August. Giving information on the conversation between the two top leaders, the Ministry of External Affairs said that during a telephone conversation with Putin, Modi recalled his/her ‘successful visit to Russia’ to attend the 22nd India-Russia bilateral summit last month. The Ministry of External Affairs further said that the two leaders exchanged views on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The Prime Minister also shared the experiences of his/her recent visit to Ukraine. he/she talked about the importance of dialogue and diplomacy between all stakeholders for a lasting and peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict between the two countries.

A day earlier, he/she had also spoken to US President Joe Biden over the phone. This call came soon after his/her visit to Ukraine. During his/her conversation with President Biden, Modi had advocated for bringing peace and stability in Ukraine. The PM had also made it clear that he/she would give full support to peace and stability in Ukraine.

India has also assured Ukraine of peace
PM Modi has recently returned from his/her visit to Ukraine. his/her pictures with Volodymyr Zelensky had caught the attention of many. PM Modi had gone here to share the pain of the people of Ukraine as well as to find a solution to the war. See a glimpse of India’s diplomacy that as soon as Modi reached Ukraine, there was a ray of hope in Zelensky’s eyes. During his/her meeting with Zelensky, PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, stressing that the war should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. Modi made it clear that India is not neutral, but is strongly in favor of peace.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that for the peace summit, I really believe that there should be a second peace summit. It would be good if it could be held in one of the countries of the global south. I told Prime Minister Modi that we can have a global peace summit in India. It is a big country, it is a great democracy. India has emerged as the undisputed leader of the global south.

Modi has decided
PM Modi’s recent visit to Ukraine and subsequent phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden have raised hopes that he/she can facilitate talks between the leaders of the warring countries. A face-to-face meeting between Putin and Zelensky, if held, could be seen as an important step towards ending the Ukraine-Russia war, which is now in its third year. Modi had visited Russia six weeks before his/her Kyiv visit and also held bilateral talks with President Putin. After his/her Ukraine visit last week, PM Modi spoke to US President Joe Biden on phone on Monday. The two leaders discussed and exchanged views on various regional and global issues, including the situation in Ukraine. Modi said on the X handle that I reiterated India’s full support for the return of peace and stability as soon as possible.

The world is also appreciating this step
Modi’s efforts to bring the two warring leaders to the negotiating table are being seen as an important step towards finding a peaceful solution. India’s recent diplomatic posture under PM Modi has led to speculations of India’s role in a peaceful resolution of the ongoing war in Europe. Swiss ambassador Ralph Heckner praised PM Modi in an interview published in The Indian Express on Monday. he/she said that now India has to look to move forward and use its influence. After the election, PM Modi was in Italy and Russia, he/she went to Poland, then Ukraine, so it is great to see that this government is now working better towards diplomacy.

Ambassador Ralph Heckner added that so it is great to see Prime Minister Modi moving in this direction, being courageous and showing action. This will be good for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. It will be good for Russia and the Russian people. It will be good for Europe. It will be good for America. It will be good for the Global South. So if we, and thanks to India, find a peaceful, negotiated solution to this conflict, the results will only be positive.
