Syrian rebels claim President Bashar al-Assad has fled the country; Video captures people celebrating


Syrian President Bashar al-Assad left Damascus for an undisclosed destination on Sunday amid a rebel offensive, Reuters reported.

The news agency cited two senior military officers, whom it did not name, as rebels who the Syrian groups said entered the capital, Damascus, early today.

The development came hours after rebels claimed to have captured Syria’s third-largest city, Homs, in the north of the country.

Hadi al-Bahra Syrian, the head of Syria’s main opposition group abroad, said that Damascus is now “without Bashar al-Assad”, according to Reuters.

Al Jazeera reported that Syrian rebels said they had captured Damascus.

Rebels earlier claimed to have entered the capital and captured the notorious Sayednaya military prison, north of Damascus, CNN reported.
