Surya and company won the match in the super over and captured the series 3-0


New Delhi. The Indian team led by Suryakumar Yadav defeated Sri Lanka 3-0 in the 3-match T20 series. The third and final T20 match played in Pallekele went into a super over after being tied. Team India got a target of 3 runs in the super over which it achieved on the very first ball. Captain Suryakumar Yadav gave India a memorable victory by hitting a four on the very first ball.

Washington Sundar bowled for India in the super over. Kamindu Mendis and Kusal Perera came to bat for Sri Lanka. Sundar started the over with a wide. Mendis ran and completed a run on the first ball. On the second ball, Kusal Perera got caught by Ravi Bishnoi near the boundary. Perera could not even open his/her account. After Perera was out, Pathum Nissanka came and he/she too was sent to the pavilion by Sundar on the next ball. That means India got a target of only 3 runs to win.

Chasing the target of 138 runs, the Sri Lankan team tied the match by scoring 137 runs for 8 wickets in 20 overs. The opening pair of Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis gave Sri Lanka a half-century start. Both shared a 58-run partnership for the first wicket. Nissanka was dismissed after scoring 26 runs off 27 balls. he/she was made a victim by spinner Ravi Bishnoi. Kusal Mendis returned to the pavilion after scoring 43 runs off 41 balls. he/she was dismissed LBW by Bishnoi. Wanindu Hasaranga fell prey to Washington Sundar after scoring 3 runs. Sundar did not even let captain Charit Aslanka open his/her account. he/she took 2 wickets in 2 consecutive balls. Kusal Perera was dismissed after scoring 46 runs. Rinku Singh got Ramesh Mendis caught by Shubman Gill near the boundary. Surya opened his/her account of wickets in T20 International cricket by dismissing Kamindu Mendis. Surya dismissed Mahish Teekshana LBW on his/her second ball.

India scored 137 runs for 9 wickets
Earlier, Sri Lanka restricted India to 137 runs for 9 wickets due to the spin magic of Mahish Theekshana (28/3) and Wanindu Hasaranga (29/2). For India, opener and vice-captain Shubman Gill scored the highest 39 runs. he/she along with Riyan Parag (26) added 54 runs for the sixth wicket to recover India from a bad start. In the last overs, Washington Sundar (25) and Ravi Bishnoi (08 not out) added 32 runs for the eighth wicket to take the team to a respectable score.

India lost 3 wickets for 14 runs
Apart from Theekshana and Hasaranga, Chamindu Wickramasinghe (17/1), Asitha Fernando (11/1) and Ramesh Mendis (26/1), who were making their international debut for Sri Lanka, also took one wicket each. Sri Lankan captain Charith Aslanka won the toss and decided to bowl first, which his/her bowlers proved right and reduced India’s score to three wickets for 14 runs in the fourth over itself. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) hit two fours off Mahish Theekshana in the second over but was LBW after missing a straight ball in the same over of this off-spinner. Jaiswal took the help of DRS but the decision went in favor of Sri Lanka.

Sanju Samson was hunted by Wickramasinghe
Chamindu Wickramasinghe, who was making his/her debut in international cricket, got Sanju Samson caught by leg-spinner Hasaranga in the next over. Samson failed to open his/her account for the second consecutive match. Rinku Singh was sent up in the batting order but he/she too got caught by Mathisha Pathirana off Teekshana’s ball after scoring one run. Captain Suryakumar Yadav (08) hit a four off Teekshana as soon as he/she came but was caught by Hasaranga at fine leg off Asitha Fernando. The Indian team could score only 30 runs for four wickets in the power play. Off-spinner Ramesh Mendis got Shivam Dubey (13) caught by wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis to take India’s score to 48 runs for five wickets.

Shubman Gill held one end
Opener Gill held one end and along with Parag, managed the innings. Parag hit a four off Ramesh Mendis while Gill hit a four off spinner Kamindu Mendis. Parag increased the run rate with two sixes off Hasranga in the 14th over. Gill completed India’s century with a four off Kamindu Mendis in the 15th over but was stumped off Hasranga in the next over. Hasranga gave India the seventh blow by getting Parag caught by Ramesh Mendis two balls later. Sundar and Bishnoi played some good shots in the end and brought India’s score close to 140 runs.
