[ad_1] New Delhi: The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of a serious matter. This is the case of students suicides in educational institutions. The court has ordered Delhi Police to investigate the suicide of two IIT-Delhi students. Both these students were from the SC-ST community. The court also asked to register an FIR in the case. The court has expressed concern about the mental health of the students. Also, to prevent such incidents, it has been said to make a guideline. For this, the court has also ordered the creation of a National Task Force.Supreme Court directed to register an FIR of Delhi PoliceThe bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan has directed the DCP to register an FIR. he/she also said that there should be no officer below the Assistant Commissioner of Police Rank for investigation. The court said, "We do not need to say anything further, because the investigation of any crime is the work of the police." This means that the police should be allowed to investigate in their own way.'Institute's responsibility for safety of students'The court also said that the administration of every educational institution is responsible for the safety and good of the students. Therefore, in case of any unfortunate incident like suicide on campus, it is his/her duty to file an FIR with appropriate officials immediately. This means that if a student commits suicide, the college administration should immediately report the police.The court further said, "This action is not only a legal obligation, but also a moral imperative to ensure transparency, accountability and justice. It is also responsible for the police officers to work with readiness and responsibility by registering an FIR without denying or delay.'Agencies work to prevent such incidents'The court said that the discharge of these duties by educational institutions and investigative agencies is necessary to prevent such incidents and maintain confidence in social institutions. The court said that every suicide is a personal tragedy that kills a person ahead of time and affects the lives of families, friends and communities. The court said that now the time has come for the court to do something in this matter and made rules to help the students.National Task Force formedThe Supreme Court directed the formation of a National Task Force to remove mental health concerns of students in higher educational institutions and prevent suicides. Former Supreme Court judge S. Ravindra Bhat will lead the team. The court directed that every state would have to appoint a nodal officer who will help in the matter. The court directed all departments and officials to cooperate with the concerned nodal officer and provide necessary information, data and assistance to the officer if needed.The decision came on an appeal filed by the parents of the two deceased students against an order of the Delhi High Court. The Delhi High Court refused to register an FIR in the case. In July 2023, B.Tech student Ayush Ashna was suicide in his/her hostel room. On 1 September 2023, B.Tech student Anil Kumar committed suicide. After both these incidents, it was alleged that students were discriminated against by faculty in IIT. [ad_2]
