Sunita Williams became dry due to lack of calories in space for 155 days. What happens to the body if it does not get the required calories?


Indian-origin American astronaut Sunita Williams has lost a lot of weight. It has been 155 days since he/she stayed on the International Space Station (ISS). Everyone is keeping an eye on the health of 59 year old Sunita. She is looking very thin in the new pictures. his/her cheeks are sunken and his/her body looks thinner than before.

A NASA employee told ‘The New York Post’, ‘She has lost a lot of weight and now she is just a skeleton. Our priority is to stop their weight loss and increase it.

Williams and his/her fellow astronaut Barry Wilmore were to stay on the ISS for only eight days. But due to a technical fault in the Boeing Starliner, they are stuck in space. The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule will bring them back to Earth, but it will not return before February. Let us understand why their weight is decreasing and what things a common person should keep in mind to maintain weight.

According to the report, Williams is not able to take the high-calorie diet which is required for astronauts. Astronauts have to consume twice as many calories as humans living on Earth. To gain weight, Williams needs to consume up to 5,000 calories a day. To maintain weight they need to consume around 3,500 to 4,000 calories every day.

In addition to eating high-calorie food, they also have to exercise for more than two hours every day to keep their muscles and bones strong in a zero gravity environment, which burns even more calories. Williams, an avid runner, became the first person to run a marathon in space by running the Boston Marathon on a treadmill in 2007. According to the report, NASA doctors had started working on Williams’ health a month ago. This was done even before those pictures went viral, raising concerns across the world about his/her health.
