Studying in Britain has become more expensive, bank balance limit increased for student visa, know how Indians will be affected

UK Financial Requirements: Studying in Britain is much more expensive because the value of the British Pound is much higher than our Indian Rupee. Because of this, not everyone is able to study in Britain. There are only a few people who think of studying in Britain when they have sufficient bank balance. However, now it is going to be very challenging for these people along with ordinary Indians to study in Britain. The reason for this is a big change regarding visa.
In fact, from January 2, 2025, Britain is imposing new financial requirements for international students including Indians. This is evidence of Britain’s changing policy regarding higher education. Under the first change since 2020, international students will be considered eligible for student visa only if they have sufficient savings. In simple language, now student visa will be given only to those Indian students who have enough money to live and study in Britain.

How much money is required for UK student visa?

Under the new policy of the British government, students planning to study in London will have to provide proof during the visa interview that they have savings of 1483 pounds (Rs 1.63 lakh) every month. Till now students had to show proof of having £1,334 (Rs 1.46 lakh) per month. If someone is going to study outside London, he/she/she should have monthly savings of 1,136 pounds (Rs 1.24 lakh), which earlier used to be 1,023 pounds (Rs 1.12 lakh).

For example, if an Indian student takes admission in a 9-month study course in London, he/she will have to prove that he/she has 13,348 pounds (about Rs 14.6 lakh). During the visa interview, proof of sufficient savings is given through bank statement or loan receipt. Only after this the officials decide whether a student will be given a student visa or not. Visa interviews usually take place at a British embassy or consular office.

How will students be affected?

These increased financial needs are going to have a big impact on Indians. The new rules will be particularly burdensome for students from low-income countries or developing economies. Already, due to financial needs, many Indian students avoid studying in Britain, now due to the high fees, they may even think of not coming here to study. If someone has taken an education loan, he/she will now need to increase the amount. Due to the new policy, students in Britain will try to avoid studying.
