Study in two levels in CBSE 9-10th! Expert said – There is a big mistake in this scheme, there will be no benefit like this

After Mathematics, Science and Social Science, Central Board of Secondary Education (cbse board) wants that students of class 9 and 10 should get two options in these subjects also. One basic and the other advanced. Earlier, CBSE divided Mathematics in Class 10 into two levels. One for those students who want to study Maths further and the other for those who do not need Maths further. If CBSE’s proposal is approved, then the session for Science and Social Science at two levels can start from 2026-27. But experts have mixed opinions. Experts say that the new plan of CBSE will be useful only when both the levels have different syllabus and classes. But this is not the case even in Maths. Second- Studying at the same level till class 10 is beneficial.

Why two levels in other subjects?

The objective of bringing social science and science to standard and advanced level is to reduce the pressure of students to study in those subjects. In which he/she is not interested and does not want to study further. This proposal has been approved in the curriculum committee meeting of the board. Now the framework of the curriculum will be considered. Approval is pending from the governing body.

What do experts say?

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 states that all subjects and assessments can be introduced at two levels, starting with Maths. In which students will be able to study some of their subjects at standard level and some at higher level. But many experts believe that ‘it is better to study each subject in the same manner in 10th class, which will be useful somewhere later. Advanced studies should be done in 11th.

Former NCERT Chairman JR Rajput says, ‘Dividing students by bringing subjects in two levels in the early stage is not a good option. It is important to bring students on par. The right solution is to give additional coaching to those students who are not doing well in the subjects. For this, it is necessary to recruit teachers in the right proportion. The board can also review Maths before implementing it.

Where is the problem? Two levels, but same study

CBSE introduced Maths in class 10th in two levels in 2019 – Maths Basic and Maths Standard. In the first year, 25% students took basic maths, last year this figure was 30%. The difficulty level of Standard is high, while that of Basic is easy. On the same lines, according to CBSE, the syllabus remains the same for both the levels of classroom teaching and internal assessment. So that students get a chance to study every range of topics throughout the year. So that they can further assess their aptitude and their capabilities.

But experts including schools say that it is of no use unless it is implemented at the classroom level. Because in Maths it is being implemented only in the exam. Sudha Acharya, Principal of ITL Public School, Delhi, says, ‘It will be beneficial only when there are different books, studies and exams for both the levels. Currently, only the exam paper is different in Maths, the books and studies are the same. Second, if there are different books and syllabus for all subjects, the classrooms will also be different. In such a situation, more classrooms and teachers are required, so there are challenges in bringing all the subjects to two levels.
