New York cellphone ban: The use of mobile phones has increased significantly among school children. Because of this, many times children do not pay proper attention to studies in the classroom. Many states of America are struggling with this problem and one state has decided that it will ban the use of mobile phones in schools. In fact, New York Governor Kathy Hochul wants to ban mobile phones in schools to focus children’s attention on studies and improve their mental health.
The mobile phone ban could be implemented from fall next year. The Governor has revealed this scheme in his/her budget proposal. Under this scheme, the use of smartphones and other electronic devices will be banned during school hours, classrooms, hallways and lunch breaks. The thing to note here is that this proposal has been brought at a time when there has been discussion for months that the use of smartphones is affecting children’s ability to concentrate and learn.

Children are not learning essential skills due to mobile phones: Governor

“Children are so busy with their mobile phones that they are not learning important skills,” Governor Kathy Hochul said at a press conference. She adds, “How difficult it must be for our teachers to teach Algebra and Geography, as they have to contend with viral dances, messages from friends, and sometimes even threats and bullying.” There is a demand to ban mobile phones in classrooms in many states. By doing this, New York is going to open the way for other states.

What is the purpose of mobile phone ban?

The purpose behind banning mobile phones in schools in New York is to prevent children from getting distracted, so that a better environment can be created for studies. Governor Hochul also said that staying away from social media and incessant messages will also improve the mental health of children. This ban is going to be applicable on all government schools in the state. However, schools have also been given flexibility in how they implement this rule, such as how phones will be kept during school hours.
