Students are committing suicide at a faster rate than the rate at which the population is increasing… NCRB figures are frightening

New Delhi: The graph of student suicides in the country has increased rapidly. According to a report based on the data of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the highest number of student suicides have been reported in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh. Kota in Rajasthan is always in the news for suicide cases, but in this report it is at the 10th position.

Suicide cases are on the rise

The report ‘Student Suicides: An Epidemic in India’ was launched on Wednesday at the annual IC-3 Conference and Expo 2024. The report states that while the total number of suicide cases in the country has increased by 2% annually, the increase in student suicide cases is more than 4%. This is the situation when student suicides are reported less to the police.

What do the figures say?

The IC-3 report states, ‘Student suicides have increased at an alarming annual rate of 4 percent over the last two decades, which is twice the national average. In 2022, students accounted for 53 percent of total student suicides. Student suicides have decreased by 6 percent between 2021 and 2022, while female suicides have increased by 7 percent.’ Student suicides are outpacing both the population growth rate and the overall suicide trend. In the last decade, the population of children aged 0-24 years has decreased from 582 million to 581 million, while the number of student suicides has increased from 6,654 to 13,044. IC-3 is a voluntary organization that provides support to higher educational institutions around the world through guidance and training resources.
