Student Suicide: Which state has the highest number of student suicides? This state is in a worse condition than Kota, Rajasthan

According to a new report, there has been an alarming increase in cases of suicide by students in India. IC3, an organization that provides guidance and training resources to schools, has revealed in its report that student suicides have increased at a rate of 4% annually over the last two decades. This is twice the national average. The report states that 13,044 cases of student suicide were reported in 2022, while the number was 13,089 in 2021. Although there has been a slight decrease in cases year after year, the matter of concern is that while total suicides (student and others) have increased by an average of 2% in the last 10 years, this figure has been 4% in student suicides.

The report further states that a total of 1,70,924 suicide cases were registered in 2022, while this figure was 1,64,033 in 2021. That is, there has been an increase of 4.2 percent in total suicides between 2021 and 2022.

State wise figures and worrying picture:

The report also gives details of states in terms of student suicides. Maharashtra had the highest number of suicides at 1,764, which is 14% of the total suicides. It was followed by Tamil Nadu where 1,416 students took their lives (11% of the total). Madhya Pradesh (1,340 – 10% of the total) and Uttar Pradesh (1,060 – 8% of the total) also have worrying cases of suicide. In Jharkhand, this figure was 824 (6% of the total).

In 2021 too, Maharashtra (1,834 – 14% of total), Madhya Pradesh (1,308 – 10% of total) and Tamil Nadu (1,246 – 10% of total) reported the highest number of student suicides. These three states account for a third of the total student suicides in the country. The report says that student suicides in Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand have increased by 14% and 15% respectively year-on-year, which is extremely worrying.

Rajasthan’s quota, a matter of concern:

The cases of student suicide are no less in Kota city of Rajasthan, which is famous as a coaching city. According to the report, 571 students committed suicide in Rajasthan in 2022.

Lack of gender-wise analysis and data on transgender students:

According to the report, while the population of the 0-24 age group declined from 582 million to 581 million in the last decade, the number of student suicides increased from 6,654 to 13,044. On the basis of gender, in the last 10 years, cases of suicide by male students have increased by 50% while cases of suicide by female students have increased by 61%.

Over the past five years, both male and female students have reported an average increase of 5% annually. In 2022, male students accounted for 53% of total student suicides. Between 2021 and 2022, male student suicides decreased by 6%, while female student suicides increased by 7%. Looking at the data from 2012 till date, male student suicides have increased by 99% and female student suicides by 92%.

The report also highlights the lack of data on transgender students. It says, “It is important to acknowledge that comprehensive and accurate data collection, recording, and reporting is imperative for transgender students, as their unique situation is underrepresented in the data.”
