According to the National Center for Sisamology (NCS), a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.5 killed New Zealand in the early hours of Tuesday.
Sharing the earthquake details in a post on X, NCS stated that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km from the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand.
“EQ of M: 6.5, on: 25/03/2025 07:13:11 IST, Lat: 46.78 s, long: 166.28 e, depth: 10 km, location: W. W. on the coast of South Island New Zealand”, it is written on X.
New Zealand’s Emergency Management and Recovery Minister, Mark Mitchell shared updates and follow-ups.
In a post on X, he/she said that the potential danger is near the coastline and requested people to stay away from the beach and water bodies.
Mitchell said an emergency mobile alert was thus released to the lower part of the island and highlighted hats could be experienced strong and unusual currents.
“An emergency mobile alert has been issued for the bottom of the South Island. There is no need to withdraw, but the coastline has possible threats. We are asking people to stay away from the beach and water. Strong and unusual currents can be experienced.”
New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency issued a national advice for tsunami activity.
It said that New Zealand’s coastal areas may expect to see unexpected growth on the shore after the earthquake.
Noted that under the danger, the area under the danger is the west coast of the South Island from Milford Sound to Pusegur Point.
Highlighting that danger, Nema asked people to go out of water, go out of the beaches and coast areas, and go away from the ports, marinas, rivers and Astruri, while highlighting that danger.
This further said in detail, “People on boats, live-Aprils and Marinas leave their boats/ships and move to the shore. Return to boats until the instructions are given by the authorities.”
Nema said that there is no need to evacuate the areas till now, however, “strong and unusual currents and unexpected growth will continue for several hours and the danger should be considered real until this advisory is canceled.”
