Stop this tradition…my credibility is also at stake, why did CJI Chandrachud reprimand the lawyers?

New Delhi : Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Tuesday condemned the practice of mentioning the same case by different lawyers for urgent hearing. The Chief Justice said that he/she would not allow this as it puts his/her ‘own credibility’ at stake. Many times, lawyers take risks to get their cases listed for urgent hearing. In such a situation, by changing the advocates, the same case gets listed again and again on different dates.

Chief Justice Chandrachud said that this tradition of repeated references by different lawyers should be stopped. You are trying to take all the risks. Whatever little discretion I have as Chief Justice will never be used in your favor because an attempt is being made to mislead this court.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said that bring three different lawyers and see…you get the order in the blink of an eye of the justice. This is what is happening in this court. I won’t do that. Because my own credibility is at stake…. The comments were made by the Chief Justice at the beginning of the day’s proceedings, when a lawyer mentioned a case related to expiry of mining lease for urgent listing.
