Stop campaigning for promotions… Justice Gavai also raised questions on the delay in appointment of High Court judges

New Delhi: Supreme Court Justice BR Gavai has expressed concern about the judges of the High Court. he/she said that some judges do not come to court on time and get recommendations for promotion to the Supreme Court. Justice Gavai said this at the National Judicial Academy Conference in Kolkata on June 29. Justice Gavai said that ever since he/she became a part of the Supreme Court Collegium, he/she has witnessed many disturbing incidents. he/she said that in some High Courts, judges do not sit in the courtroom on time.

‘Some judges get recommendations for promotion in the Supreme Court’

Justice Gavai said, ‘It is shocking to know that some judges sit in court at 11:30 instead of 10:30 and get up at 12:30 instead of 1:30. It is even more shocking to know that some judges do not sit in the second shift.’ Justice Gavai said that it is sad to tell that some judges even get recommendations for promotion to the Supreme Court. They try to prove how they are more suitable for promotion to the Supreme Court than other senior judges of that court.

Justice Gavai said- judicial discipline is necessary among judges

Supreme Court Justice Gavai said that it is painful to say that some judges go to the extent of lobbying for their candidature for promotion to the Supreme Court. he/she said that judicial discipline is very important among judges. Judges should come to court on time and be honest towards their work.

Justice Gavai said in Kolkata

Speaking at the National Judicial Academy Conference in Kolkata on June 29, Justice Gavai said that since he/she became part of the Supreme Court Collegium, “many disturbing instances have come to my notice. Judges in some High Courts do not sit in court on time. It is surprising to know that some judges sit at 11.30 am when the court timings are 10.30 am. They leave at 12.30 pm, while the court timings are till 1.30 pm.”

Collegium works on database- Justice Gavai

Explaining the process of appointments, Justice Gavai said that ‘the Collegium works on a database. It contains information about all the judges who are in the area under consideration. Apart from this, inputs received from various sources, including the opinion of consulting judges in the Supreme Court, who had the opportunity to examine the functioning of such judges, are also taken into account.
