Sri Lankan President is coming to India for the first time after becoming the President, know why this visit is important

New Delhi : Sri Lankan President Anura Kumar Dissanayake is in India on his/her first foreign tour. he/she will meet PM Modi on Monday, the second day of his/her three-day tour. Anura of Janata Vimukthi Peramuna, who reached the presidency by winning the presidential election in September on the issue of inflation and corruption, had contested the election from the left alliance NPP. The image of his/her party JVP has been considered anti-India.

Will go to China after India

After India tour, Anura is also scheduled to visit China. This visit of the new President of Sri Lanka is very important for India. The reason for this is that it took almost a year for Indian diplomacy to deal with the way President Muizzu created uneasiness in Maldives through his/her anti-India statements.

The second challenge came from the transition in Bangladesh, where relations with the interim government of Mohammad Yunus have not yet become comfortable after Hasina’s departure.

close at diplomatic level

In such a situation, India would not want any kind of distance to be seen at the diplomatic level with the new leadership of the neighboring country Sri Lanka. That too when India has continuously helped Sri Lanka after its economic crisis. Therefore, the mistake of being unaware of the sentiments of the opposition parties in Bangladesh was not made here.

The biggest example of this was seen in August when National Security Advisor Ajit Doval visited Colombo in August. During that time, he/she had met all the candidates trying their luck in the elections to be held in September in Sri Lanka. Dissanayake was also involved in this.

Hints were given after victory

On the other hand, after Dissanayake won the election, PM Modi had clearly expressed in his/her congratulatory message that India is very eager to work with the new government of Sri Lanka. The PM had also said that Sri Lanka has a special place in India’s Neighborhood First policy and vision. After this, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar visited Sri Lanka in October.

It is believed that among the issues discussed during this period, there were many projects at bilateral level. During this visit, Dissanayake had told Jaishankar that Sri Lankan territory would not be allowed to be used against India’s security interests. Dissanayake has come to India for the second time this year. he/she came to India in February this year. During this tour, he/she met Foreign Minister Jaishankar and other high level leadership.

Attitude changed in last two years

The stance of JVP, which once raised the slogan of Indian expansionism, has changed after the year 2022. Everyone has seen the way India has helped Sri Lanka after its economic crisis. Apart from this, it is believed that Dissanayake wants to focus on digital public infrastructure. In such a situation, they know that there is benefit in having cooperative cooperation with India. In this context, the example of Mohammed Muizzu’s changed stance is in front of him/her.
