There is a reason behind every journey. Ida was there for Laura Pfeiffer too. he/she had to see the world, he/she had to know it. But, in the world she was living in, this was no reason for a woman to step out of the house alone. In her country Austria and almost all of Europe in the 19th century, it was an exception for women to go on long-distance journeys. There is no question of going out alone in that also. Laura made the excuse that she was going to meet a friend. They crossed the Danube River, braved the waves of the Black Sea, passed through the desert of Egypt. Wherever she went, she faced staring eyes and many questions about a single woman setting out on the journey. Still Laura kept going. At that time his/her march was considered a rebellion, but today it is an achievement. Laura is counted among the early female travelers.

It is said that if the person traveling with you is right, then the journey is not known. But, if you want to know everything through travel, then it is better to travel alone. The greatest joy of solo traveling is freedom. Every decision there is ours. We choose every path ourselves. One does not have to wait for anyone to move forward and does not have to ask anyone to stay. You don’t have to match your watch and steps with anyone else. This freedom gives us the opportunity to connect with the places we pass through. There is an opportunity to meet new people and learn about new cultures. Hands are empty, they can move towards anyone. Loneliness motivates us to be more social, to make new friends. To talk to them, to understand them.

We are all stuck in a comfort zone at some level or the other. The feeling of being safe does not allow one to go out from there. But, this zone is like a roundabout, where life keeps revolving on the same path again and again. Solo traveling takes you out of this comfort zone. She pushes on a new path. New place teaches to fight new challenges. Prepares for more difficult things. And even if there is no preparation, what difference does it make? Not everything in life happens as per plan. Many times a decision has to be taken immediately after looking at the situation. Such situations can arise many times while traveling solo. Consider this as life training.

This world is very big and has many colors. It is not necessary that you find the right companion to go somewhere. So, how long should one sit waiting for someone? If Laura had waited for the right time and the right partner, would she have seen how hot winds in Arabia create sandstorms or how beautiful the blue waters of the Red Sea look? If he/she had waited for the right time, would Rahul Sankrityayan have left time for ‘that is, wandering curiosity’?

Solo traveling is the name of traveling alone, but in reality the whole world is traveling with us. As a solo traveler we are open to socializing with anyone. The river also starts alone, but as it moves forward it meets new companions. At last when she meets the sea, she has more than what she had left home with. Even traveling alone makes us rich with experiences.

The unknown scares us and this unseen world is full of unknown things. But, how will we know until we leave? How will the introduction happen unknowingly? Traveling is not going away from home, but coming closer to the truth. While traveling solo we have full time to talk to ourselves. To understand your abilities, weaknesses, desires and dreams. If you have a clear understanding of yourself, many things become easier.
