Slogan crossing 400 and then away from majority…how was the year 2024 for BJP?

New Delhi: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party at the Center traveled a journey full of ups and downs in the year 2024. It started with the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when the party gave the slogan ‘This time, 400 paar’. However, the BJP leadership proved unsuccessful in sensing the public mood. The party which raised the slogan of crossing 400, itself remained away from majority. In such a situation, many types of discussions started regarding the party. However, the BJP leadership quickly made a comeback defying all speculations. The party again proved its political strength by securing landslide victories in states like Haryana and Maharashtra. The party will also be searching for its new president in the new year.

BJP’s strengths and weaknesses revealed

In the year 2024, the weaknesses and strengths of BJP were fully exposed. However, what stood out was that the party was successful in adapting its message and methods to the voices coming from the ground. In January this year, the grand inauguration ceremony of Ram Temple took place in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. Through this, the ruling BJP at the Center hoped to get unprecedented gains in the Lok Sabha elections. But the party lost its majority in the general elections. Party suffered a setback in Lok Sabha elections

The ruling party had given the slogan ‘Abki Baar, 400 Paar’ with the aim of returning to power after the Lok Sabha elections with a mandate higher than the 303 seats it won in 2019. The results of the general elections were unfavorable. The NDA alliance secured 294 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha, due to which the alliance had no difficulty in forming a majority government. On the other hand, Congress alone got 99 seats, which was a better performance than the party expected. This is its best performance in general elections in the last decade.

Where did BJP go wrong in the battle of 2024?

On one hand, a section of party workers and supporters changed as BJP did not get majority on its own in the Lok Sabha elections. At the same time, a section of voters was also worried. In protest against the ‘arrogance’ of BJP, the opposition raised the slogan ‘Constitution is in danger’, and its impact was also visible on the voters. Where Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh did not appear fully active during the general elections. However, its allies and supporters were seen helping BJP’s campaign with full force in the subsequent assembly elections, the direct impact of which was visible in the election results.

Party excited by bumper victory in Haryana-Maharashtra

Even though the path for the party this year was not as per his/her expectations. Nevertheless, the party once again established its strong presence on the political map of the country by securing notable victories in the assembly elections in states like Haryana and Maharashtra. Due to the disintegrating ‘India’ alliance, BJP took control of itself this year, albeit late. Some alliances of BJP proved to be visionary.

At some places the strategy of alliance was adopted and at some places the policy of ‘walk alone’ was adopted.

In Andhra Pradesh, the party joined hands with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), while its senior leaders had good relations with Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy. In Odisha, BJP calls off talks with Biju Janata Dal. Both these steps proved decisive. The alliance came to power in Andhra Pradesh under the leadership of TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu. BJP came to power for the first time in Odisha. 41 seats from these two states helped form the BJP-led government at the Center for the third consecutive time under Modi’s leadership.

Many challenges before the party in the new year

Now the new year is coming, in such a situation Narendra Modi remains the undisputed leader of the party. his/her government has not shown any weakness so far as a coalition government. On the other hand, as the last phase of the year 2024 approached, signs of disintegration started appearing in the opposition ‘India’ group and allies are distancing themselves from Congress. In such a situation, the circumstances seem to be in favor of BJP. However, the party also has to take many important decisions in the new year 2025. The most important thing in this is the election of BJP President.

Who will be the president of BJP?

Just as many decisions of 2024 went in favor of BJP, the current national president of BJP JP Nadda has now become a minister in the Narendra Modi government at the Centre. In such a situation, the party leadership will also have to elect a new president in his/her place. It is believed that the BJP leadership will take a final decision on this in the new year. The Hindutva organization, considered the ideological guide of the party, will play an important role in this election. Now it will be interesting to see on whom the party leadership will put its trust for the new president.
