Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal is no more with us. he/she died on Monday (23 December) at the age of 90. Just 10 days ago, on December 14, Benegal had celebrated his/her 90th birthday with much fanfare. The pictures of this celebration have become the last memories of his/her birthday. Shabana Azmi, who started her career with Benegal’s film ‘Ankur’ in 1974, shared pictures of her birthday celebration, which turned out to be her last birthday.

Divya Dutta also shared glimpses of Benegal’s birthday and wrote, ‘And the legend turns 90. I will never forget my first film with him/her. I went outdoors for a dance sequence. he/she made me choreograph the song with local dancers and shot it in one take with the entire unit cheering me on the whole night. I was 18 years old, but someone like Shyam Benegal handing over this responsibility to me gave me confidence for life. Happy Birthday Shyambabu! It’s been a privilege to do 5 projects with you…lots of love.

Shabana Azmi started her career with Shyam Benegal’s film

Shyam Benegal made his/her feature film debut with Ankur (1974) starring Anant Nag and Shabana Azmi. The film was critically acclaimed and won the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film, marking the beginning of Benegal’s influential career in Indian cinema.

The third film had reached ‘Cannes Film Festival’

Shyam Benegal’s third film Nishant (1975) achieved international recognition with a Palme d’Or nomination at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival. Starring a stellar cast like Girish Karnad, Shabana Azmi, Anant Nag, Amrish Puri, Smita Patil and Naseeruddin Shah, the film showcases Benegal’s filmmaking talent.

Benegal’s last directorial film

Benegal’s last directorial venture ‘Mujib: The Making of a Nation’ (2023) depicts the life of Bangladesh’s founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. he/she was known for famous films like ‘Manthan’ and ‘Mandi’.
