Shreyas Iyer’s Test ‘exile’ continues, Duleep Trophy fifty did not help


New Delhi. The Indian team has been announced for the first Test match against Bangladesh. Batsman Shreyas Iyer has not got a place in the 16-member Indian team. Shreyas’s Test exile also continues after being excluded from BCCI’s central contract. Shreyas did get a chance in ODIs after Gautam Gambhir became the head coach, but he/she is constantly being ignored in red ball cricket. Despite playing a half-century in the Duleep Trophy, the Indian selection committee did not give Shreyas a place in the Test team.

Shreyas Iyer is captaining the India D team in the Duleep Trophy. In the first round of the Duleep Trophy, Shreyas’s team was defeated by Team India C, captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad, by 4 wickets. Shreyas’s hopes had increased with Gautam Gambhir becoming the head coach of Team India. Shreyas has played for KKR under the guidance of Gambhir, who was the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. Looking at Shreyas’ form in the Duleep Trophy, it was believed that this Mumbai batsman could make a comeback in the Test team, but this did not happen.

Shreyas Iyer scored 9 runs in the first innings while captaining Group D in the first match of Duleep Trophy. he/she could not live up to the expectations in the first innings. However, learning from this, he/she led from the front in the second innings and scored a brilliant fifty. But this innings of Shreyas proved insufficient to be included in the Test squad. Iyer had refused to play domestic cricket last season, after which he/she was dropped from the national team. However, Iyer had then said that he/she was injured. After this, the BCCI selection committee took away his/her annual contract.
