New Delhi: In the scorching heat of the capital Delhi, a 23-year-old delivery rider named Sonu travels hundreds of kilometers with his/her two-year-old son Sarthak. Sonu’s story is a story of love, struggle and a father’s unwavering courage. Sonu is originally from Bihar. From a young age, he/she took up the responsibility of the family and worked along with his/her studies. In 2019, he/she fell in love with a girl named Nancy and came to Delhi and got married. Initially he/she worked as a labourer in Delhi, then worked as a security guard. Sonu has been a delivery rider for the last three years. A few months ago, Nancy left her son with Sonu and went to the village.

Since then Sonu has been struggling on the streets of Delhi with his/her son. he/she works all day on his/her rented bike so that he/she can give a good life to Sarthak. he/she wants Sarthak to study and move forward in life. Sonu said that I just want my son to go to school early, study and fulfill his/her dreams, play with friends. My son should get a better future and get proper opportunities in life.

‘All the tiredness disappears after meeting my son’
Sonu works for more than 12 hours and earns Rs 500. Sometimes on the footpath, sometimes while resting in the park, he/she talks to Sarthak and forgets his/her fatigue. Sonu wishes that a day comes when he/she can spend time with Sarthak, play, eat and be happy with each other.

‘It was a big decision to bring my son to work with me’
Sonu says that it is a very difficult decision for him/her to bring Sarthak to work or leave him/her alone. he/she is always worried about protecting Sarthak from traffic, accidents, pollution and dust. Once stray dogs chased him/her, one of them even bit him/her but Sonu has to face every difficulty to protect his/her son. Sonu said, “There have been many times when stray dogs have chased my bike and I have had to deal with the danger as well as protect my son. I have also been bitten by dogs, yet I keep making deliveries, and in the meantime I try to keep my son safe.”

‘Sometimes there is no money even to buy food’
As a delivery rider, Sonu’s earnings depend on the orders he/she completes. So, he/she has to make as many deliveries as possible to earn money for his/her family. “There have been times when I did not have money to buy food, but I always gave priority to my son’s food. My wife, too, worked as a maid to contribute to our household expenses. Now that she has returned to our village, the responsibility of raising my child rests on my shoulders,” he/she says. Amidst fatigue, fear and responsibility, Sonu is struggling for a better future for his/her son. Stories like Sonu’s remind us that love and devotion have no limits.
