Should Dalits and tribals get reservation in private sector? Parliamentary committee will consider

New Delhi: Should Dalits and tribals get reservation in private sector? An important parliamentary committee will discuss the proposal for reservation in the private sector. This is a sensitive issue that can have serious political and social consequences. This committee is a parliamentary committee related to the welfare of Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes. The topic of discussion is to expand the scope of reservation for Dalits and tribals from government sector to private sector. This demand was raised prominently during the Congress-led UPA government. However, then this issue cooled down.

Issue of reservation before parliamentary committee

The UPA government had formed a ‘Group of Ministers’ to discuss the issue. But even after long discussions, no concrete result emerged. This is probably the second time that a top government or parliamentary committee will discuss the topic. The committee has included it in the agenda of its annual deliberations. Sources said that this issue was raised by Azad Samaj Party MP Chandrashekhar Azad. he/she had requested to include it in the agenda in the first meeting of the committee. he/she also got support from other members.

What are the arguments for and against

The proposal of reservation in private sector was raised by the advocates of social justice. However, this never became a strong demand. Its supporters argue that due to rapid privatization, seats in the government sector are shrinking. This also affects the seats covered under reservation. On the other hand, those who oppose it say that it will harm the economy.

What did committee chairman Kulaste say?

Those opposing reservation in the private sector believe that it will compromise the eligibility for appointments in industry and the corporate world. Some people also argue that implementing reservation in private institutions would be unconstitutional. Committee Chairman Faggan Singh Kulaste said that the members decide on the issues. This is the agenda for the year and we will take up this topic with time.
