This market is as old as the Red Fort. This market is called Chhatta Chowk or Chhatta Bazaar. It is said that this market was built for women during the Mughal period. In earlier times, women were not allowed to go out of the palace, so markets were built for them inside the palaces or forts.

Generally the market built in Agra Fort is called Meena Bazar. This was not an ordinary market. Women of royal families, queens of Rajputs used to come here and set up shops. Even better thing is that only women could come here for shopping. But it is said that the real Meena Bazar is not in Agra but inside the Red Fort of Delhi.

If historians are to be believed, Meena Bazaar is considered to be the world’s first shopping mall. This mall started during the Mughal period. This market was first organized by Humayun. While later Akbar expanded it.

To reach Meena Bazaar, you have to get down at Red Fort Metro Station from Violet Line Metro. As soon as you come out of Gate No. 1, you will see Meena Bazaar or Chatta Bazaar inside the Red Fort at a distance of a few steps. This market is open from 9 am to 7 pm. If you see it yourself, then you will understand why the rent of the shops here is only Rs 16.
