Russia is using it extensively… How prepared is India to deal with the threats of drone attacks?

New Delhi : The pictures from the Russian city of Saratov reminded everyone of the 9/11 attack on America. Ukraine attacked a tall building in this Russian city with a drone. The drone collided with the building after which everything went up in smoke. Drones are being used a lot in the Russia-Ukraine war. This is being used from both sides. The threat of drones is posing a challenge for the armies of all countries. India has also increased its preparations to deal with this threat and is working on acquiring many new systems to increase its capability.

The drone is small but the danger is high

There are two types of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). One is UAV which is similar in size to an aircraft. And the other is of the drone category, which are smaller in size. It is easy to detect the bigger UAVs because the same system is used for them which is used to detect an aircraft and the same method of air defence is used to destroy them which is used for aircraft. But drones are smaller in size and now there are many types of drones. These range from kamikaze drones to swarm drones. They fly at low altitudes, so detecting as well as destroying drones is a challenge. If they are swarm drones, the challenge increases further because swarm drones are a group of many drones.

How to deal with the threat of drones

According to an Indian Army officer, there are two ways to deal with enemy drones. Soft kill and hard kill. Hard kill means destroying it completely, while in soft kill its system is jammed or disrupted. However, soft kill has its limitations because to jam a drone, the entire bandwidth cannot be jammed and its exact frequency cannot be known. Also, if it is a swarm drone, that is, a whole flock of drones, then the soft kill capability is not such that it can jam all the drones at once. If the band is encrypted, then it becomes even more difficult.

What are Russia and Ukraine using?

According to experts, Russia and Ukraine are using a combination of both soft kill and hard kill to deal with the threat of each other’s drones. Soft kill is temporary, so the combination of both is considered the most accurate strategy. There are currently five types of systems in the world to deal with drones, i.e. for hard kill. First is laser weapon system. Second is high-power microwave guns, third is drone kill system, i.e. the drone is shot down by the drone itself, fourth is anti-drone guns and fifth is VMCDS, i.e. vehicle mounted counter drone system. This system fires small rockets and is effective in dealing with swarm drones (a whole flock of drones).

India is increasing its capacity

The Indian Army has a soft kill system to deal with the threat of drones, these were taken under emergency procurement. The army has drone jamming systems that can detect and jam drones up to 10 kilometers. The army has low level light weight radars that can detect drones flying at low altitudes. The army is now also acquiring anti-drone guns to increase its capacity and the process of acquiring smart ammunition has also been started for this. The army has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for anti-drone high-power microwave system.

Search for Laser Weapon System

The army is looking for a system that has a range of five kilometers and is capable of dealing with small drones and swarm drones. The army is also moving forward with the process to acquire laser weapon systems. The army currently has low level light weight radars but is now preparing to acquire them in large numbers. The army is also looking at an option that is a combination of both hard kill and soft kill. Experts say that India will also have to keep an eye on the preparations of its neighboring countries. Turkey has developed a high power microwave system and Pakistan will get it in the coming time.
