Opposition parties created a ruckus in both the houses of Parliament on Friday demanding a discussion on the NEET issue. Due to this, the proceedings of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha had to be adjourned repeatedly. Opposition parties were demanding immediate discussion on issues related to NEET exam and other examinations. At the same time, there was to be a discussion on the motion of thanks on the President’s address in the House. However, the matter could not be resolved due to which the proceedings of the House had to be adjourned for the day. On the other hand, MK Stalin has written a letter to the Chief Ministers of 8 states including Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding ending the NEET exam. he/she has also written a letter to Rahul Gandhi.

Political uproar over NEET intensifies

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin wrote a letter to Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi requesting him/her to raise the demand for exemption of the state from NEET. Along with this, he/she requested the INDIA alliance to pass a resolution against the NEET exam in their assemblies. The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Friday once again passed a resolution by consensus urging the Center to exempt the state from the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). he/she also appealed to allow students to enter medical courses on the basis of 12th exam marks. The resolution was passed amid protests by BJP members and a walkout from the House. It calls on the Center to amend the National Medical Commission Act and end the nationwide examination in view of growing protests in many states in view of alleged irregularities in NEET.

However, BJP ally Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) supported the proposal moved by Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin. Stalin has argued that the exam is discriminatory and deprives rural and poor students of the opportunity to pursue medical education. Chief Minister Stalin claimed that the medical entrance exam ‘NEET’ deprives states of their right to admit students to medical education with 12th pass as eligibility criteria.

Opposition members led by Rahul Gandhi remained adamant on their demand, after which Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House first till 12 noon and then for the whole day. Speaker Birla and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told the opposition members that they can raise the issue during the discussion on the motion of thanks on the President’s address. Om Birla said that there is a difference between protesting on the road and protesting inside the House. Does the opposition not want to run the House? House proceedings could not continue

Later, Rahul Gandhi said that India Block wants to have a constructive debate with the government on the issue of NEET exam and paper leak. It is unfortunate that we were not allowed to do so in Parliament.

Opposition members, including Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, entered the well of the House and continued their protest despite repeated adjournments. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said that it was very sad for me, unbelievable for me that Mallikarjun Kharge, a leader with more than five decades of parliamentary experience… went into the well of the House.
