‘RRR’, ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, ‘The Kashmir Files’, ‘Kantara’ included in Oscars’ ‘reminder’ list

The ‘Reminder’ list includes films that will officially compete against other films in various categories. However, just being on the list does not guarantee that the film will make it to the final nominations for the Academy Awards to be announced on January 24.

Indian films like ‘RRR’, ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, ‘The Kashmir Files’ and ‘Kantara’ have been released by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) which has released a list of 301 feature films eligible for Oscars. The ‘Reminder’ list includes films that will officially compete against other films in various categories. However, just being on the list does not guarantee that the film will make it to the final nominations for the Academy Awards to be announced on January 24.

Apart from Pan Nalin’s ‘Chello Show’, Vivek Agnihotri’s ‘The Kashmir Files’, Marathi films ‘Mee Vasantrao’, ‘Tujhya Saathi Kahi Hi’, R Madhavan’s ‘Rocketry: The Nambi’ are India’s official sends to the Oscars. Effect’, ‘Iravin Nijhal’ and Kannada film ‘Vikrant Rona’ also figure in this list. Indian films “Chello Show”, “RRR”, “All That Breathes” and “The Elephant Whispers” have already made it to the Oscars’ shortlist for four categories. This is probably the first time that India has made it to the Oscars ‘shortlist’ in four categories. It is only after this process that the final nominations are announced.

Being on the eligible list means he is among more than 300 eligible films to be voted on by the Academy’s more than 9,000 nominations. This is not the first time that Indian films have found a place in the ‘Reminder’ list of the Oscars. Last year, ‘Jai Bheem’ and ‘Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham’ were also part of the list. In 2021, ‘Bombay Rose’, ‘The White Tiger’, ‘Soorarai Pottru’, and ‘Kalira Atita’ also made it to the list. However, ‘The Kashmir Files’ director Agnihotri said on Twitter that ‘The Kashmir Files’ has been ‘shortlisted’ for ‘Oscars 2023’ in ‘The Academy’s’ first list.

He said, “It is one of the five films from India. I wish them all the very best. An important year for Indian cinema.” Agnihotri also claimed that the film’s actors Pallavi Joshi, Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumar and Anupam Kher have been ‘shortlisted’ for the Best Actor and Actress categories. The Academy has simply listed the names of the actors and actresses of all the films included in the ‘reminder’ list. The director said that this is just a beginning and there is a long way to go.

Kher said he is overwhelmed with The Kashmir Files and that his name has been shortlisted for the Oscars 2023 in the Best Film and Best Actor categories. He said that being ‘shortlisted’ is a big victory. Actor-director R Madhavan of Rocketry: The Nambi Effect says the film’s team is surprised to make it to the list. “Nambi sir is getting the recognition he deserves on such a big scale and what more can I ask for from my directorial debut,” he added. Nominations for the 95th Annual Academy Awards will be announced on January 24 and the awards will be announced on March 12.
