New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is no more. he/she breathed his/her last on Thursday night at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. 92 year old Manmohan Singh was ill for a long time. After losing the country’s two-time Prime Minister, many big politicians including current PM Narendra Modi remembered Dr. Manmohan Singh.

While sharing his/her photos with Manmohan Singh on social networking site X, PM Modi wrote, ‘India mourns the demise of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji. Rising from an ordinary family, he/she became a renowned economist. he/she held various government positions, including Finance Minister, and left a strong mark on our economic policy over the years. his/her intervention in Parliament was also practical. As our Prime Minister he/she made extensive efforts to improve the lives of the people.

Was born in Punjab, Pakistan
Born on September 26, 1932, in village Gah in the Punjab province of undivided India (now Pakistan) to Gurmukh Singh and Amrit Kaur, Singh completed his/her matriculation in Punjab in 1948. his/her academic career took him/her from Punjab to Cambridge, UK where he/she obtained a First Class Honors degree in Economics in 1957. Singh then obtained the degree of ‘D.Phil’ in Economics from Nuffield College, Oxford University in 1962.

Beginning of career as a professor


he/she started his/her career teaching at the faculty of Panjab University and the prestigious ‘Delhi School of Economics’. In the year 1971, Singh joined the Ministry of Commerce of the Government of India as an Economic Advisor. This was soon followed by his/her appointment as Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance in 1972. Among the many government positions he/she held were Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Advisor to the Prime Minister and University Grants Commission. Includes the post of Chairman.
