New Delhi: There is a continuous discussion about who will be the next national president of BJP. Ahead of the election of its national president, BJP has selected the heads of several of its state units. All of these state heads have some things in common. These include being rooted in ideology and linked to the RSS, working for a long time in the organization and having a relatively low profile. A mix of continuity and change is being seen in the election of BJP state unit presidents. In Chandigarh and Chhattisgarh, BJP has expressed confidence in the old leadership, while in Assam, Goa and Maharashtra it has opted for change.

Option for change in Assam, Goa

Jatinder Pal Malhotra and Kiran Singh Deo were re-elected as BJP presidents of Chandigarh and Chhattisgarh unit respectively. Whereas in Assam and Goa, BJP opted for change. The party appointed Damuji Naik as the new state president in Goa and Dilip Saikia in Assam. Both Saikia and Naik were associated with the RSS.

Naik, a two-time MLA, has been associated with the Sangh since his/her student days, while Saikia started his/her political journey from his/her student days. he/she was associated with ABVP, the student wing of RSS.

Three things are important for the party

Saikia told our associate newspaper Economic Times that the party has chosen a common worker like me as the president of the Assam unit. In our party, a booth worker can emerge on the national scene. For us party workers, three things matter most – nation, organization and ideology.

Some of the things that all of them have in common is that the BJP central leadership has considered those who have a ‘worker’s’ outlook and are deeply rooted in ideology. Also have been working for the organization for many decades. Party leaders said that calm and committed workers are being rewarded and this may be the same pattern in future too.

Caste equation is also important

Caste considerations have also been kept in mind in these appointments. Like Goa, Naik comes from the influential Bhandari caste. In Maharashtra, BJP has appointed longtime party worker Ravindra Chavan, who keeps a low profile and is committed to the party’s ideology. The Chief Minister of the BJP-led MVA government in the state is a Brahmin.

Therefore, BJP has chosen Maratha, an influential community in the state, as the state president. The message from these appointments is clear that leaders rooted in ideology, and who have worked in the organization with a low profile, will sail through the BJP in the coming days.
