The festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna is celebrated every year as Krishna Janmashtami. On Janmashtami, grand celebrations are held in Krishna temples across the country to mark the birth of Lord Krishna at midnight. One of which is built at the same place which used to be a jail and it was there that Lord Krishna was born. Shri Banke Bihari Temple Vrindavan

Sri Banke Bihari Temple is one of the main temples of Lord Krishna in Vrindavan. It was built in 1863 by the Goswamis and the idol was brought from Nidhivan. Mangala Aarti is performed only once a year at the Sri Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan. A huge crowd of devotees gathers for the Mangala Aarti on the day of Sri Krishna Janmashtami.

Jagannath Temple, Puri, Odisha

One of the pilgrimage sites of the famous Char Dham Yatra, the Jagannath Temple is India’s most famous temple of Lord Krishna. It is a sacred temple for Hindus and Buddhists and in the main sanctum of the temple, there is a finely carved wooden idol of Jagannath. On the occasion of Puri Rath Yatra, the three deities (Krishna, his/her brother Balarama and sister Subhadra) are pulled by devotees in their chariots and taken to the Gundicha Temple. On the day of Janmashtami, Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are given a ceremonial bath and dressed as the child form of Krishna.1

Dwarkadhish Temple, Gujarat

Dwarkadhish Temple is one of the most famous temples dedicated to Lord Krishna in India. This temple is very popular. It is said that Lord Krishna fulfills every wish of the devotees who pray here with a true heart. After visiting this temple, your soul will get a lot of peace. Let us tell you, on the day of Janmashtami, the entire temple is decorated with fragrant flowers. On this day, a flood of devotees throngs the temple. The idols of Lord Krishna are decorated with antique and precious jewels. Utsav Bhog is offered to Lord Krishna at 11.30 pm.

Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple, Mathura, Uttar Pradesh

The Krishna Janmabhoomi temple is built at the same place where there was once a prison where Lord Krishna was born. The main sanctum of the temple houses a marble statue of Lord Krishna along with smaller statues of Krishna. There is a small room behind the main sanctum that represents the prison where Krishna was born.

ISKCON, Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh

Vrindavan ISKCON which is also known as Mathura Krishna Balram Mandir is magnificent. The ISKCON temple was built in 1975 and to reach the main sanctum of the temple, devotees have to go through intricately carved walls and domes. The temple is a different place on the day of Janmashtami. Krishna’s birth anniversary is celebrated with great pomp here. The entire temple is painted in the color of Kanhaiya.
