Material

  • Red lentils 3/4 cup
  • Dates- 6
  • Tamarind – lemon sized ball
  • Ginger – 3/4 inch stick
  • Garlic – 1 clove
  • Red chilli pieces – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Bay leaf – 1
  • Cumin – 1 teaspoon
  • Oil – 2 spoons
  • Black salt – a pinch
  • Pomegranate seeds – 1 tablespoon
  • coriander leaves

Before making sweet and sour masoor dal, soak tamarind in 1/3 cup of water for 20 minutes. Mash it to remove the pulp. Apart from this, wash the red lentils in water several times, until the water becomes clear. Soak the lentils for 30 minutes, drain before using. Cut the dates into small pieces. Grate the ginger and also grind the garlic. Peel the pomegranate, chop fresh coriander.

Now after heating two spoons of oil in a pan, add crushed garlic and cumin seeds, as soon as the seeds start crackling, add grated ginger and dry red chilli. Keep stirring for a minute, then add soaked red lentils and mix well. Now add tamarind pulp and dates along with two and a half cups of hot water and reduce the flame.

You have to close the lid of the pan and let it boil for 30 minutes. Then remove the lid and look at the dal, cook for a few more minutes until the dal becomes as soft and thick as you want. After this, remove the dal from the flame and add a pinch of black salt to it. Then put the sweet and sour lentils in a serving bowl, sprinkle pomegranate seeds and fresh coriander and serve.
