Will Virat play under the captaincy of Rishabh Pant?

New Delhi. Rishabh Pant is likely to be made the captain of Delhi for the Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra, but there are doubts over Virat Kohli’s participation. According to a report, Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) is going to have a selection meeting and they will select their team for the next Ranji Trophy match starting from January 23 in Rajkot.

DDCA secretary told Times of India in an interview, “There will be a selection meeting tomorrow afternoon and it is likely that Rishabh Pant will be the captain for the away match against Saurashtra. Yes, Pant has confirmed his/her availability for the next Ranji match and he/she will directly join the team in Rajkot. We want Virat Kohli to play, but we have not received any information from him/her. Whereas Harshit Rana is included in the T20 team and hence is not available.

Why can’t Kohli become captain?
Usually, when a big player returns to domestic cricket after playing international cricket, he/she is not given the captaincy because he/she knows less about the players of the team and the strategy of the team. Therefore, only the one who knows and understands the team is given the captaincy.

When did Virat and Pant play?

Pant last played a Ranji Trophy match in the 2017-2018 season. Virat Kohli last played Ranji Trophy for Delhi in 2012. Many people, including former Indian greats Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri, want Rohit Sharma and Kohli to play red-ball cricket. Recently, Kohli and Rohit had performed very poorly in the Test series against Australia.

Rohit Sharma was seen practicing with the Mumbai team on Tuesday, but it remains to be seen whether he/she will be available for the next Ranji Trophy matches starting from January 23. Apart from Kohli, Pant and Harshit Rana, Delhi has named 38 probable players for the remaining two matches. Delhi will face Saurashtra in Rajkot from January 23.
