Patralekha’s family wanted her to become a CA, but her fate brought her to the field of acting. Patralekha, who started her career with Rajkumar Rao in Hansal Mehta’s film ‘Citylights’, did not have good years in her career, but now she is active in the entertainment world with full enthusiasm. After the recent ‘Wild Wild Punjab’ on OTT, she will be seen in projects like ‘Gulkand’, ‘Phule’ and ‘IC 814’. In an exclusive interview with ‘presswire18 Times’, she has told very interesting things about the ups and downs of her career, women related issues and actor husband Rajkumar Rao.

You had a good start with the film ‘Citylights’, your film was also appreciated, but then why was there a long gap in between?

– I kept working continuously, but things did not work out in those films. After ‘Citylights’, I did not get that kind of strong work. I did not have many options, despite this I kept working. Then came the pandemic, but the pandemic was very beneficial for me, because during that time OTT was emerging. Many shows and movies were being made then and I worked hard. And now all of them are on the verge of streaming and releasing one by one.

I heard that your family wanted you to become a CA, but then you came into the field of acting?

– My dad was a CA, so he/she wanted me to take charge of his/her office. Actually, I was also very good at math and accounts. I also wanted to carry forward my dad’s legacy, but I could not go in that direction. I think luck is also a thing. When I expressed my desire to become an actress to my father, he/she felt a little bad initially, but when I started getting work in advertising films, he/she thought I should work for 2-3 years and if things did not work out in this field, then I should give the CA exam. But during that time I got my first film ‘Citylights’ and my acting journey started.

I got 3-4 lakh rupees as fee for my first film

Being an outsider, what challenges did you face in the industry?

– I faced a lot of difficulties because I did not know how to work in the industry. When I got my first film, I did not know what PR (public relations) was. There was no money then. I got Rs 3-4 lakh for my first film. I did not know anyone here. I will not say that insiders do not have challenges. They have their own problems. If I talk about myself, then in a way I was lucky. My parents had a house. I did not have to share a room, nor did I have to struggle for food.

How was the audition and rejection phase for you?

– I still give auditions and I still get rejected. But I don’t feel bad about it. I think this is my job. I am an actress and it is not that directors don’t trust me, but every character has a look and whether I meet that standard or not is a different matter. By the way, I enjoy giving auditions a lot. All the work I have got till now has been through auditions. No director has ever called me and said that Patra this role is for you. I feel bad when the films don’t do well or our series are not watched.

After ‘Citylights’ I did not have any work for 5 years.

What was the most difficult and the best phase of your career?

– The most difficult phase of my career was the five years after ‘Citylights’. When I had no work. No one was giving me work, nor was anything clicking. Everyone kept saying that you are a good actress, but they don’t understand what to do with you? Actually they did not want to cast me. The good phase has been the last 2-3 years, when I was working continuously. I believe that your hard work and focus never go waste. One day or the other, the arrow hits the target.

What bothers you the most about girls and women?

– I get most angry when I hear about rape of young girls. When I come to know about molestation of girls. When I hear that they have been raped and killed. All these things seem very heavy to me. Domestic violence against women is also a very bad thing, but one can get out of it, but I cannot tolerate the injustice done to girls.

Raj told me that if anything happens, I should react by shouting.

As a girl, when do you feel the most inferior?

– When they don’t get respect. When I was young and I was walking down the street, people would whistle or push me or surround me. I used to feel ashamed to say something back to them. Raj (her actor husband Rajkummar Rao) had told me that if this ever happens to me, I should react by shouting at that very moment. So that in future they don’t dare to do this to anyone else. Ever since Raj explained to me that I should speak back, a lot has changed in my life. Now when I am uncomfortable in a situation or I don’t feel right, I raise my voice. You have to take a stand for yourself.

How do you and Rajkummar Rao complement each other as husband and wife?

– We both are each other’s biggest supporters. his/her success is my success. My success is his/her success, in the same way his/her failure is mine and mine is his/her. We share everything. We are like two wheels of a vehicle.
