Radhika Apte is all set to return to the big screen with her latest film, Sister Midnight >, a bold and genre-defying drama directed by Karan Kandhari. This film has already gained global attention, earning nominations at BAFTA 2025 and Cannes Film Festival before its release in India on May 30.
A Film That Breaks Boundaries
Set in the bustling city of Mumbai, Sister Midnight offers a deep and unusual cinematic experience. The movie blends reality, body horror, and dark comedy while exploring themes like female identity, isolation, and the urge for freedom.
Radhika Apte, known for her powerful and offbeat roles, shared that reading the script for Sister Midnight instantly grabbed her attention. She was drawn to the film’s originality and the freedom it offered as an actor.
“It felt very exciting. It was very honest, very raw. Karan wrote exactly what he wanted without worrying about what commercial producers would think. There’s very little dialogue, so a lot had to be expressed through facial expressions and body language. It’s a film where you really get to experiment,” she said.
A Strong Director-Actor Bond
Director Karan Kandhari praised Radhika’s performance and spoke about the strong connection they built during the shoot.
“It was the best collaboration I’ve ever had with an actor. Working with her was like having the best imaginary friend to play with,” he shared.
He further explained that his approach focuses on behavior and instinct rather than a purely intellectual process. “Everything the character Uma does is impulsive and based in the present moment. My job was to help us both stay rooted in that moment and respond naturally.”
An Accomplished Team Behind the Camera
Sister Midnight is written and directed by Karan Kandhari and produced by Alastair Clark, Anna Griffin, and Alan McAlex. The film features a talented ensemble cast including Ashok Pathak, Chhaya Kadam, Smita Tambe, and Navya Sawant.
The movie’s technical brilliance is enhanced by cinematographer Sverre Sørdal and editor Napoleon Stratogiannakis, whose combined work adds depth and visual intensity to the film’s storytelling.
Recognized Internationally Before Its Release
Before its release in Indian cinemas, Sister Midnight has already made a strong impression worldwide:
- Nominated for ‘Outstanding British Debut’ at the BAFTA Awards 2025
- Nominated for the Golden Camera Award in the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes 2025
These honors underline the film’s creative strength and unique voice in today’s global cinema landscape.
